Iowa All-Senior Team
First Team
Senior of the Year: Connor McCaffery (Iowa City West)
19.6 PPG (52 FG%, 41 3FG%), 3.7 APG, 1.8 SPG, 4.8 RPG
In what was a tightly contested race, it’s McCaffery who gets the nod for this honor after he led his Trojans to a 4A title earlier this month. The future Iowa Hawkeye was doing it all for West down at Wells Fargo Arena, and he could be a freshman who makes an immediate impact with Iowa next season.
Douglas Wilson (Hoover) — 17.9 PPG (58 FG%), 3.4 BPG, 14.0 RPG
One of the bouncier and most uncanny players in the state, nobody is better around the rim than Wilson. Prior to the season, Kingdom Hoops program director Jake Sullivan prophesied that the Hoover power forward was the best rebounder in the country, and Wilson certainly did nothing to disprove that remark. Wilson will likely head JuCo next season, then could be a nice addition to a mid-major program in a year or two.
Devontae Lane (Iowa City West) — 14.9 PPG (51 FG%) 4.1 APG, 3.1 SPG, 3.6 RPG
Year after year this burly lead guard for Iowa City West makes our lists of top players, and he wrapped up what was truly a special career with a state title; his second in four years. Lane, like Wilson, will likely take the JuCo route, and we could very well see him surface with a mid-major program in two years.
Joe Smoldt (Gladbrook-Reinbeck) — 29.8 PPG (52 3FG%, 49 FG%), 4.9 APG, 2.7 SPG, 4.7 RPG
If it wasn’t for McCaffery willing his Trojans to a 4A state title, it’s likely that Smoldt comes away with the Senior of the Year honors. What a tremendous cap to an unbelievable career. He put on some jaw-dropping performances seemingly routinely year-in and year-out at the state tournament, and that’s what the Upper Iowa signee will most be remembered for.
Austin Phyfe (Waverly-Shell Rock) — 19.1 PPG (67 FG%), 2.6 APG, 1.5 SPG, 13.0 RPG
This future Northern Iowa Panther did pretty much what everyone expected on him this season: dominate. He’s a 6-foot-9 power forward with a some nice skill and coordination playing at the 3A level. His very high field goal percentage is a good indicator of just how dominant he was. Phyfe — Iowa’s third-ranked 2017 — is a very nice get for UNI.
