Best Available: Scoring Off Guards
With the end of the 2017 high school basketball season right around the corner, there are still plenty of talented collegiate prospects that are available to fit a number of different systems. Over the next week or so, we will be doing a “Best Available” series, giving coaches an idea of what kids are available and what kind of style they play in.
We continue as we look at six scoring two guards that are still available. Stay tuned for more best available pieces moving forward. (Note: This list is in no particular order and in no way represents any rankings of any kind.)
Halil Parks | 6’2” | Wakefield
Parks isn’t a “buckets in bunches” guy as much as he’s a consistent scoring threat throughout the game. He fills lanes well in transition, can finish well with both hands and knows how to use the rim to shield him from contesting defenders. He can also shoot it from deep, and when the ball is in his hands he has a great midrange game as well. He’s a smooth and efficient scorer that gets it done day in and day out.
Brandon Edmond | 6’0” | John Paul the Great
Edmond could be labeled as a shooter, but his ability to shoot it off the bounce, the move or in rhythm makes him tough to gameplan for. He has deep range, a quick release and he can attack closeouts and finish in them middle or get to the free throw line. He takes charges on the defensive end very well, and his tough nosed approach as a scoring guard makes him a real weapon.
Aaron Martin | 6’3” | Martinsville
He seems to be forgotten, but Martin is a strong and athletic wing that can do a lot of things. He’s a bully in transition when he gets downhill, he has a smooth middle game and he attacks the glass well for his size. He can score in a lot of ways without dominating the basketball, and he’s able to guard multiple positions because of his strength and athleticism.
Jaylen Dillard | 6’2” | LC Bird
Many think of him as just a shooter, and while he could easily have been put in the “shooting wings” list, Dillard will surprise you with how he can create shots for himself. Averaging close to 15 points per game, he’s a knock down shooter that never stops moving off the ball, and when he’s running the floor in transition he’s dangerous because he can hit the three in transition. With the ball in his hands he’s a good finisher in both transition and coming off a handoff, and his ability to shoot it from anywhere on the court makes him so hard to guard.
Joe Davis | 6’1” | Battlefield
If you need someone who you can just put the ball in their hands and go get a bucket, Davis is that type of player. He’s shifty off the bounce, gets in the lane regularly, can finish with both hands through traffic and has a tough pull up game as well. He can score it in bunches with his ability to get hot quickly from deep and get out in transition and get to the foul line, and he’s done so against good competition regularly.
Marvin Trotman | 6’3” | Atlantic Shores
“Trot,” as he’s called by teammates, is a very talented scoring wing that can score with ease when he’s locked in. He can put it on the floor and finish through traffic, is athletic in transition where he can run the wing or handle it and he can make tough shots from everywhere on the floor. If he can get back to being hungry and go somewhere that he will be pushed, Trotman could be a steal at the scholarship level.
