8th Region POY and Other Top Region Performers
The Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches (KABC) released their list of each region player of the year at the end of February. The list covers all 16 regions of the state and PHKY has your recap of each one, as well as other top performers who stood out during the 2016-2017 Kentucky high school basketball season.
8th Region Player of the Year :
Joe Griffin, South Oldham (2017)
The senior guard averaged 21.3 points per game, shooting a red hot 60% from the field. South Oldham finished with the best record in the region, but came up short in reaching the regional final. Griffin will follow a long line of Kentucky guards who go on to become a preferred walk-on at the University of Louisville.
OTHER TOP REGION PERFORMERS:
Kemryn Jenkins, Eminence (2017)
Jenkins scorched the nets this season, averaging 27 points per game while shooting 63% from the field. He also averaged right at 8 rebounds per game. Jenkins is getting looks from a number of small college basketball programs.
Dieonte Miles, Walton-Verona (2019)
At 6’7, Miles is one of Kentucky’s top 15 prospects in the 2019 class. Averaging 12 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, expect Miles to take off in the coming years. Walton-Verona ended the season with a 26-7 record.
Charles Cochran, Collins (2017)
I first took notice of Cochran at the Ric Bolus “Blue-Chip” Camp this summer. Cochran is a versatile wing who is capable of posting up, beating you off the dribble, or knocking down the open 3-pt field goal. Look for Cochran to make a very good player at the small college basketball level. He averaged 15.3 points and 7.2 rebounds this season.
Dominque Turner, Collins (2017)
Turner averaged 11.2 points and 6.8 rebounds for Collins this season. Helping lead Collins to the state tournament, Turner had 10 points and 9 rebounds in the Sweet Sixteen and 10 points with 4 rebounds in the quarterfinals.
Cobe Penny, Anderson County (2018)
Anderson County knocked off Collins in the district finals before falling to them in the regional final 53-54. Cobe Penny was a huge reason to Anderson’s success this season, averaging 23 points and 6.7 rebounds as a guard. Penny had 25 points in the regional final game.
