5A All-Tournament Team
The 5A state tournament concluded with rivals from the 5A Metro Region playing for the 3rd time this season in #1 Apollo and #3 Sunnyslope. Although Apollo had the better of the two in the first two games, Sunnyslope was able to take them down in the most important of the three games. The state tournament featured a number of top tier prospects demonstrating their ability to play this game at a high level. Below is the list of 5A All-Tournament Team.
5A All-Tournament Team
5A Tournament MVP
Kyle Fischer 6’5 SF Sunnyslope 2018 – Although there is ample reason to put Chris Orozco in this spot, the game changer for me is the all-around impact that Fischer brings to the table. His ability to throw the high-low pass is such a luxury for Orzoco. In addition, Fischer is tough on the glass and is constantly finding ways to make plays on the offensive and defensive end of the floor.
5A All-Tournament 1st Team
Chris Orozco 6’6 PF/C Sunnyslope 2018 – Orozco was a monster for Sunnyslope down the stretch of the tournament. For instance, Liberty and Apollo really struggled with handling his constant sealing and soft touch around the rim. The guards as well as Fischer do a great job of moving the basketball side to side and seeing the post.
Holland Woods 6’0 PG Apollo 2017 (Portland State) – Although it took Woods some time to get involved in a scoring capacity, he gave it all he could to bring Apollo back and send the game to double OT. Woods has improved his ability to score drastically and was tough for opposing teams in on ball situations due to his strength and underrated speed.
Dre Marin 6’0 PG Apollo 2017 (Southern Utah) – Marin is an absolute game changer. He has improved his ability to shoot the basketball off of the dribble and is a knock down shooter from deep. Moreover, he is a tough on ball defender who does whatever it takes to make plays that will help his team win games. Although he was relatively quite for much of the state championship from a scoring perspective, he did hit a big three and found other ways to impact the game.
Cole Roether 5’10 PG Liberty 2017 – Roether’s improved play toward the end of the season was a huge reason for the team’s success. He has an knack for making momentum plays. He frequently turns a turnover into a transition 3 or layup makes him a dynamic player that ruins the confidence of opposing teams. His big shots down the stretch against Arcadia and Mesquite were critical to the team moving forward in the state tournament.
Colten Kresl 6’1 PG Chaparral 2017 – Kresl was a handful the entire season and for much of the state tournament. Chaparral was in control of much of the game against Apollo until Kresl picked up his 4th foul early in the 3rd quarter. Moreover, Kresl’s big play ability and relentless competitiveness was demonstrated throughout the tournament.
