13th Region POY and Other Top Region Performers
The Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches (KABC) released their list of each region player of the year at the end of February. The list covers all 16 regions of the state and PHKY has your recap of each one, as well as other top performers who stood out during the 2016-2017 Kentucky high school basketball season.
13th Region Player of the Year :
Peyton Broughton, North Laurel (2017)
Leading his team to an overall record of 24-8, Peyton Broughton proved to be one of the best players in the state, and easily one of the top scoring threats. An Eastern Kentucky University commit, Broughton averaged 30.8 points per game this season, to go along with 8.3 rebounds. In a game against Champman High School (SC), Broughton torched the nets for 67 points, shooting 24 of 28 from the field.
OTHER TOP REGION PERFORMERS:
Cameron Carmical, Harlan County (2017)
The senior guard averaged 20 points per game and served as the Black Bears’ floor general throughout the season, helping lead Harlan County to the Kentucky state tournament. Harlan County finished the season 31-4.
Treyce Spurlock, Harlan County (2017)
Spurlock averaged 15.1 points per gam, shooting 44.1 percent from the field to go along with 5.4 rebounds per outing. Along with Carmincal, Spurlock helped guide the Black Bears to a District 52 Tournament championship, Region 13 Tournament championship and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen at Rupp Arena.
Andrew Taylor, Corbin (2018)
Taylor is quickly emerging as one of, if not the top 2018 prospect after his performances this season. Averaging 29.5 points and 11.8 rebounds per game, the junior guard has picked up offers from Belmont, Northern Kentucky, Furman, Winthrop, Appalachian State, and Eastern Kentucky.
Jared Grubb, South Laurel (2017)
Grubb played an integral role in the Cardinals state tournament last season as a junior. This year, Grubb averaged just over 20 points per game, leading South Laurel to a 23-11 overall record.
Markelle Turner, Knox Central (2018)
Turner guided Knox Central to a 27-6 overall record, losing only 3 games to region foes. His averages this season stood at 18.2 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.
