12th Region POY and Other Top Region Performers
The Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches (KABC) released their list of each region player of the year at the end of February. The list covers all 16 regions of the state and PHKY has your recap of each one, as well as other top performers who stood out during the 2016-2017 Kentucky high school basketball season.
12th Region Player of the Year :
Peyton Gover, Southwestern (2017)
Gover is often overlooked because of his size, but that is an absolute mistake. The 5’8 point guard is a baller. Averaging 30 points per game, 3.6 rebounds, and a handful of assists, Gover’s impact outmatches his height and stature. He’s a leader and isn’t afraid of anyone who steps on the floor with him. In one game against Pulaksi County earlier in the season, Gover seemed to be “denied” by a number of Maroon defenders most of the game and still dropped 30 on the region’s tournament winner. He holds offers from Lindsey Wilson and is being courted by Asbury, Transylvania, and has been offered a preferred walk-on spot at Eastern Kentucky University.
OTHER TOP REGION PERFORMERS:
Steven Fitzgerald, Pulaski County (2018)
PHKY’s current #1 prospect in the 2018 class, Fitzgerald first made a name for himself while playing with Kentucky’s top AAU program, the Louisville Magic. Since then he has been courted by a number of D1 programs. This season he helped lead Pulaski County to it’s first state tournament in years, averaging 25.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.
Trevon Faulkner, Mercer County (2018)
Faulkner is right up there with Pulaski’s Fitzgerald as one of the top 2018 prospects. Faulkner averaged 24.2 points and 11.9 rebounds per game this season.
Noah Young, Lincoln County (2017)
Young may have been the best point guard in the region not name Peyton Gover. The Patriot senior averaged 23.7 points per game while shooting 50% from the field.
Landon Powell, Pulaski County (2017)
Powell is a sharpshooting combo guard who averaged 17.3 points while shooting 42% from beyond the arc this season. His ability to play both guard positions will benefit at the college level. He currently holds offers from Allegheny (Pennsylvania) and Asbury University.
