11th Region POY and Other Top Region Performers
The Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches (KABC) released their list of each region player of the year at the end of February. The list covers all 16 regions of the state and PHKY has your recap of each one, as well as other top performers who stood out during the 2016-2017 Kentucky high school basketball season.
11th Region Player of the Year :
Taveion Hollingsworth, Paul Laurence Dunbar (2017)
This season’s Mr. Basketball, Hollingsworth will go down as one of the most decorated players in the City of Lexington’s history. Winning a state championship his junior year, he became this first player from Lexington to win Mr. Basketball since 1984 this senior season. He averaged just over 28 points and 7 rebounds per game and also became the City of Lexington’s all-time leading scorer at 2,495 career points.
OTHER TOP REGION PERFORMERS:
Michael Moreno, Scott County (2019)
Another top prospect in Kentucky’s ultra-talented 2019 class, Moreno (a forward) averaged 22.2 points and 10.1 rebounds this season. He helped lead the Cardinals to a 31-6 overall record, with their only regulars season loss to a Kentucky school coming at the hands of Lexington Catholic. Scott County lost out to eventual champion Bowling Green during the state tournament. Moreno has taken unofficial visits to Louisville, Kentucky, and Indiana.
Luke Johnson, Lexington Catholic (2017)
Johnson has committed to Loyola (Maryland) and helped lead Lexington Catholic to the 11th Region tournament final. This season Johnson averaged 20.9 points per game, shooting just under 50% from the field.
Kyle Rode, Lexington Christian (2019)
Rode helped lead LCA to its first ever 43rd District championship and regional tournament berth. He averaged 14.5 points and 5.4 rebounds. Rode has taken unofficial visits to Vanderbilt and Indiana.
Carter Hendrickson, Lexington Christian (2018)
Hendrickson flew underneath the radar going into the season, but that is not the case now. He finished the season averaging 15.3 points per game and and 8.1 rebounds. He led the Eagles in both scoring and rebounding in the district championship win and 11th Region tournament bout against Madison Central.
Jake Duby, Lexington Sayre (2017)
Duby helped lead Sayre to it’s best season in program history, winning 23 games (23-10 overall record) and advancing to the 11th Region tournament. Duby averaged 21.8 points per game and 4.6 rebounds.
Isaiah Cozart, Madison Central (2019)\
We’ve mentioned how talented Kentucky’s 2019 class is, right? Cozart is no different. The sophomore center is already breaking state blocking records, while also averaging 11.6 points and 10.3 rebounds.
