OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Webster Groves is 15-3 this season and ranked No. 3 in Missouri Class 5, but have only played a handful of games with five star recruit Carte’Are Gordon, a powerful and athletic 6’9 forward who has committed to play at St. Louis. With him on the court teaming with 2018 guard Courtney Ramey, the Statesmen appear to be contenders in Missouri for a state title.
Iowa City West came into Saturday’s game sporting a 16-1 record and a No.1 ranking in Iowa. They featured senior Connor McCaffery and sophomore Patrick McCaffery, the sons of Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery. Both have committed to play for the Hawkeyes.
MVP: Carte’Are Gordon (Webster Groves). A five star 2018 recruit, Gordon is a powerful and athletic 6’9 forward that can dominate the paint and play on the perimeter. He had 28 points and also hauled in six rebounds and handed out two assists, while throwing down six rim-rocking slam dunks.
Offensive Player of the Game: Courtney Ramey (Webster Groves). A 6’4 2018 point guard, Ramey committed to Louisville on Feb. 3 and showcased his all-around game, scoring 28 points, hauling in nine rebounds, handing out six assists and recording four steals. He had it all working in the first half on Saturday, scoring 12 points, dropping dimes and hauling in seven rebounds. Ramey has elite speed and quickness and is nearly impossible to contain in the open court.
Defensive Player of the Game: Cam Potts (Webster Groves). Potts was all over the Iowa City West guards on the perimeter throughout this one, coming up with several steals on the perimeter and making life difficult for the Trojans.
Best shooter: Connor McCaffery (Iowa City West). Kid can flat light it up. A left handed 6’6 2017 wing player, McCaffery knocked down four 3-pointers in this one despite being the focal point of the defense. McCaffrey finished the game with 21 points to lead ICW.
Best rebounder: Connor McCaffery (Iowa City West). Stuck his nose in there and hauled in seven rebounds to lead ICW.
Best passer: Devontae Lane (Iowa City West). A strong and talented 6’2 2017 guard, Lane scored 17 points and helped ICW get into its offense. He used his size and athleticism to get into the lane and make plays.
Best player off the Bench: Hakeem Odunsi (Iowa City West). He had a big fourth quarter and showed off his ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter, knocking down three 3-pointers in the fourth to help the Trojans rally late. Odunsi is a talented 6’6 2018 wing player that can handle the ball on the perimeter and brings a lot of size to a wing position.
Young players to watch: Patrick McCaffrey (Iowa City West). Has tremendous length at 6’7 with a long wing span. A 2019 Iowa commit, McCaffrey can handle the ball a little and has a versatile skill set at the offensive end of the court.
