Even though Danville was the away team on the scoreboard they looked to run away with the victory and led at one point 30-13 midway through the second quarter.
At half it was 32-19 and after the third it was 46-37 in favor of Danville. But then in the fourth Park Tudor started intentional fouling with just over five minutes left in the game. Danville piled up 41 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter and Park Tudor fouled them 21 times. Danville made six shots and still scored 36 points in the fourth quarter to take the 81-72 win.
Leading scorers: Park Tudor: Isaiah Rice 17, Brent Brimmage 16, Kobe Webster 15, Isiah Moore 13. Danville: Alec Burton 27, Connor Jones 18, Zach Callahan 17, Sam Comer 11.
Leading rebounders: Park Tudor: Isaiah Rice 5. Danville: Alec Burton 15.
MVP: Alec Burton (Danville)
Burton played really, really well and basically led his team to the win. He could do anything inside he wanted scoring 27 points and grabbed everything that came off the rim. Danville really needed him to have a good game and this was one of the best I’ve seen this year overall.
Best offensive performance: Zach Callahan (Danville)
Callahan made some really superb cuts that set him up for a few easy lay-ins. He battled hard on the offensive boards grabbing a few and getting put backs off of them. He went 7-of-10 from the line and finished the game with 17 points.
Best defensive performance: Kobe Webster (Park Tudor)
Webster kind of pressed a little tonight and didn’t play that well on offense but he had four steals on the defensive end. He played well and showed that he was much quicker and shiftier than anyone else on the court. Recently committed to Western Illinois and should be a guy once he becomes more efficient.
Best stat sheet stuffer: Connor Jones (Danville)
Jones scored 16 points and added in four rebounds along with two assists and two steals. He really played solid and was 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Jones is a solid sophomore and he already is a great player on this team because he can basically do it all.
Plays of the Game: Every foul that Park Tudor gave worked in Danville’s favor
Danville was fouled 21 times in the fourth quarter and still outscored Park Tudor by one.
Best underclassman: Sam Comer (Danville)
Comer guarded Webster and he did a really good job on him. He is so long and lanky and much quicker than he looks. The freshman also scored 11 points with mainly just playing in the second half. Comer is a role player who is still growing as a freshman and will only get better in time.
Best under-the-radar performance: Austin Cowart (Danville)
Cowart led the charge tonight at the point guard position and scored 11 points to go along with six rebounds. He fouled out late in the game but he did his job and passed the ball around really effectively and ran the offense like he needed to without turning the ball over much.
Best aspect of the game: Danville student section
They were into the game the whole game and never stopped cheering. Danville held onto the lead and the Danville crowd let the Park Tudor bench and players hear it. They really helped Danville keep their momentum when the game got a little closer
Best shooter: Isiah Moore (Park Tudor)
Moore played decently in this one and hit a lot of tough shots. He made two threes in a row at one point in the second half to close the gap and then just kind of stopped making shots. You can tell he’s a guy that someone is going to have to cover at all times and he made Danville pay a few times tonight.
Best takeaway: If this is the Danville team that appears the rest of the tournament the sky is the limit. They played very well and I haven’t see a team dominate like this in a while like Danville did in the first half.
