Continue ReadingIt started out as one frantic back and forth filled with a ton of missed shots and it ended with a bunch of made shots. After the buzzer, Barr-Reeve was victorious and got past rival Linton-Stockton to advance to the Semifinal round of Sectionals on Friday night. Barr-Reeve and Linton aren’t known for their offense so the final score of 37-34 shouldn’t shock anyone.
MVP: Trevor Lengacher (Barr-Reeve)
Barr-Reeve and Linton-Stockton went in knowing that points were probably coming at a premium so Lengacher being able to provide 11 points on 3/6 shooting and grabbing three rebounds was huge. There were a lot of points in time where you didn’t think that Barr-Reeve was going to be able to get ahead or even pull away. Trevor did a lot of his work early and it helped keep them within striking distance. At the end of the game, his teammates were able to provide more support than Linton’s and that was the difference.
Play of the Game: Gabe Gladish (Barr-Reeve)
Gabe was great, especially down the stretch. He was 2/5 from behind the arc and ripped off one with just about two minutes left. He then followed that up with a floater to take the lead back for the second straight possession. That sequence was key and allowed Barr-Reeve to stay out in front.
Best Offensive Performance: Tyler Meurer (Linton-Stockton)
There obviously wasn’t much offense in this game and really the only guy who had it going from start to finish was Tyler Meurer. The undersized point guard was actually very good and dynamic. He hit a couple threes and was good when trying to drive the lane. He didn’t get much help but he kept them in the game and gave them a chance to win. He made big plays in the biggest times of the game.
Best Defensive Performance: Keegan O’Neill (Barr-Reeve)
Especially early on, O’Neill was doing a great job limiting Linton-Stockton on second chance points. They really struggled early when they were forcing the ball down the lane. He racked up 5 boards in the first half and between him and Lengacher, Linton wasn’t going to make anything near the rim early on.
Best Guy Off The Bench: Kip Fougerousse (Linton-Stockton)
There wasn’t a ton of offense in the game but it seemed other than Tyler Meurer, Linton was only able to get bits and pieces from the rest of their team. One of those guys was Kip who came off the bench to go 2/3 from deep and was the second leading scorer. He helped keep Linton in the lead when Barr-Reeve was threatening early on.
Best Intangibles: Jonathan Walker (Barr-Reeve)
While he only went for 6 points and 6 rebounds, it was a great performance from Walker. The 6’5 forward was huge on the defensive side of the ball and seemed to just make every play that was needed at the last second to get Barr-Reeve into the position they needed to be in. Most of the team was like that on this night but Walker especially. His three pointer with 1:25 to go was the final nail in the coffin for Linton-Stockton. Barr-Reeve never surrendered the lead after that.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Austin Ainscough (Barr-Reeve)
Ainscough wasn’t a guy on anyone’s radar coming in but he was clutch in the final quarter. He had a huge and-one that put Barr-Reeve with one point of Linton. That was the least amount of points that Barr-Reeve would be behind the rest of the game. They went on to win and Austin’s 3 points and 5 rebounds looked more like double that with the way this game was played.
Best Underclassmen: Keegan O’Neill (Barr-Reeve)
O’Neill is the easy pick. The freshman big man is already having an outstanding season and that just proves how good he can become. Not many big men are that good this early on and he’s impactful. He can make plays on both sides of the ball and has the ability to stretch out the floor. Who knows, yet, how good he can be but he’s already looking like he’s going to be a good one in the class.
Best Player For College Coaches To Watch: Trevor Lengacher (Barr-Reeve)
The 6’4 forward is a little different than most players. He’s an undersized power forward who can stretch the floor with his shooting but he’s big enough in the post that he can bang around with just about anyone. Look for him to do well at a DIII program that likes everyone on the floor to be able to hit a jumper because that is his bread and butter.
Best Storyline Moving Forward: Barr-Reeve obviously is the team moving on here and they will now face Mitchell on Friday. This won’t be near as hard as this Linton-Stockton game but they shouldn’t just runaway with the game. Barr-Reeve was my pick to win 2A but with their style teams won’t be blown out.
