Southmont pulled it out 75-65 after trailing by 10 in the third quarter to take fourth place in the conference this year.
Leading scorers: Southmont: Cam Chadd 23, Justin Howard 17, Kaleb Swick 14. Frankfort: Carter Taylor 21, Malik King 20.
Leading rebounders: Southmont: Cam Chadd 11. Frankfort: Carter Taylor 16.
MVP: Cam Chadd (Southmont)
Chadd got off to a slow start but produced a really solid stat line at the end of the game and led his team in the second half. He finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, and a steal. Chadd hit three threes and was really efficient in the game. A great performance from the junior who we can almost expect to do this every night.
Best offensive performance: Carter Taylor (Frankfort)
Taylor was a force from the beginning in the game. He came out conservative and kept shooting threes, but then late in the first he started going inside. Once he did this he scored 15 points in the first half. He lost it in the second half only scoring six points but for about a six minute span in the game he was unstoppable.
Best defensive performance: Kaleb Swick (Southmont)
Swick was really good on defense on Taylor. He shut him down for the most part in the second half and when Southmont ran their half-court trap, he got a few steals out of it. One led to a dunk on senior night. Swick didn’t rebound as much as he usually does but that was due to Taylor pulling him out.
Best stat sheet stuffer: Malik King (Frankfort)
King was a guy I didn’t know coming in and he finished with 20 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists. He played the lead guard role really well and was one of the bright spots on Frankfort’s team. Definitely a guy to watch going forward.
Plays of the Game: Southmont’s 14-0 run over two minutes
There wasn’t a single play that stood out for Southmont but a series of plays. Near the end of the third quarter, Southmont went on a 14-0 run over a span of two minutes to take a 55-50 lead with about 30 seconds left in the third and to give them the momentum.
Best underclassman: Casey Henry (Frankfort)
Henry is a sophomore starter for Frankfort and he at this point is a role player. He’s a short stocky kid but really quick and can get off shots really quickly. He scored 10 points and grabbed a few rebounds. He’s a guy that can get it going quick, but had an off night tonight.
Best under-the-radar performance: Chase Cassida (Southmont)
Cassida is a short kid that plays forward for Southmont. Not the most mobile but he knows where to position himself. He’s got great court IQ and knows where to put the ball. He’s a guy that Southmont must have to succeed.
Best intangibles: Patrick Scheidler (Southmont)
Scheidler filled up the stat sheet in all categories tonight with seven points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. He has a motor that never stops and he plays hard. Something that coaches love in high school kids.
Best shooter: Justin Howard (Southmont)
Howard is a sophomore that can really shoot. He has a weird form but is really solid on the catch-and-shoot. He made 5-of-8 from behind the arc and when he is on he’s unstoppable. He knows where to go so that he can get the ball ready to shoot. You have to close out on him really quickly.
Best takeaway: Southmont may have played their best game of the season, down 10 at one point they battled back and made it a game. They shot the ball well and played really good defense. Frankfort was coming in winning three in a row and they struggled tonight. Carter Taylor was playing well early but then they went away from him and settled for bad shots.
