With that, Cathedral junior wining Jarron Coleman stepped up and went to work scoring 24 points and leading Cathedral to a 48-46 victory over Fort Wayne Snider.
MVP: Jarron Coleman (Cathedral)
In one of his best offensive games of his career, Coleman dropped 24 points and had 10 rebounds. He was very efficient, something he has had to battle from time to time. He stepped up big time in the second half after Snider took a 6-point lead. Coleman was a big beneficiary of the Cathedral press and he put together most of his points in that stretch.
Best Offensive Performance: Jarron Coleman (Cathedral)
Coleman was easily the top offensive player in this game not only because of his 24 points and 10 but the manner in which he got it. He was 9/13 from the field and 8/9 from two. He didn’t force his three point shot like he can do at times. He was smart and efficient and it turned out to be the deciding factor in this win.
Best Defensive Performance: Tra Landers (Cathedral)
The key stretch of the game was when Cathedral decided to press Snider. They were down at the time and it was the turning point that got Cathedral the lead again and at the head of that was Tra Landers. Landers was a menace and kept turning Snider over and they threw together a great comeback. Landers is a solid defender with his size and length and he proved that in this game.
Play of the Game: Danny Goggans
Oddly, the play of the game in this one was a foul. It really shouldn’t have been a foul but it was called. The play was a block by Goggans on Malik Williams where he was faced up with him at about 8′ from the rim and he had enough bounce to be able to swat him clean. Not many people are going to block the 6’11 Williams but Goggans showed that he is one of those people.
Best Player Off The Bench: James Franklin (Cathedral)
With everything that has gone on with James Franklin this season, it was great to see him come in to play in the first half. He makes this team really good and gives them another offensive weapon as well as one of the better distributors in the state. He sees the floor so well and his handles allow him to do pretty much anything he wants.
Best Intangibles: Danny Goggans (Cathedral)
Goggans is one of the more versatile guys you will find. He was pretty solid in this game giving Cathedral a guy that they could switch on and off of Malik Williams and then back down on a guard. He’s a solid rebounder and that has a lot to do with how active he is. He’s that glue guy that does everything you need him to.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Keandre Brown (FW Snider)
Brown is a small guard with a big game. He’s not the best player on his team but he makes a log of key plays. He’s got a strong frame and a little speed mixed with some toughness so when he looks to drive he can fight through quite a bit. He was the best player on the floor for Snider for most of the game and was the most consistent scorer.
Best Player Coaches Should Pay Attention To: Mike Barnfield (FW Snider)
While this wasn’t the best game I have seen him play all year, it was still a game that showed how he can become a solid collegiate player. Mike is a 6’3 guard with handles and versatility to play quite a few different spots. He’s very active and long and with some work he can be a solid defender. He’s a guy that could fit in at a JUCO and come out as a really solid DII level player.
Best Underclassmen: Dillon Duff (FW Snider)
Would slot in James Franklin here but wanted to get someone else in. Duff is a 6’5 wing who fills his role right now as a facilitator/rebounder. Duff has the ability to handle the ball but he’s going to have to improve as a jump shooter to really keep him as a wing. Solid driving threat and his size and handles can create issues.
Best Storyline Moving Forward: How does Fort Wayne Snider compete in their upcoming Sectional and are they able to take down Fort Wayne North? That is the biggest question. Everything in that Sectional is going through North and this season already, North has beaten them by three in overtime. It was close enough that Snider will have confidence going into that game. Taking out North could change the whole complexion of the northern half of the 4A tournament.
