Super Sophomores: Top Ten DMV Area Point Guards
Maryland, D.C., and Northern Virginia feature a wealth of young talent, and the point guard position is as deep as any. Below are ten sophomores to know if you’re recruiting the DMV.
HERU BLIGEN | ST. ANDREW’S
Heru Bligen has been on a tear on a tear for St. Andrew’s. The long & athletic lead guard is averaging 6.8 rebounds per game this year, and has recorded 10 or more boards in 7 different games so far. Bligen plays a downhill, aggressive style and absolutely locks up defensively. UMBC and Navy are the two schools reportedly involved with Bligen’s recruitment.
JASON GIBSON | SIDWELL FRIENDS
Something about Jason Gibson screams big time player. The high IQ guard is a sharpshooter from deep, but also makes reliable decisions with the ball. Gibson is crafty around the basket, and doesn’t mind taking a charge on the defensive end.
JAHMIR YOUNG | ST. MARY’S RYKEN
Jahmir Young is quietly emerging among the top sophomore guards in the area. The smooth lefty is sneaky athletic and can score it from all three levels.
ANTHONY HARRIS | PAUL VI
Since his heroics at Bishop O’Connell, Anthony Harris has scored in double figures for five straight games. Harris picked up a recent offer from West Virginia under his belt, and is fresh off a visit to the Virginia/Villanova thriller last weekend.
XAVIER JOHNSON | EPISCOPAL
Among players on this list, Xavier Johnson is probably among the most valuable to his team. Considered a pass-first point guard, Johnson has scored in double-digits for 6 straight games, including 30 last night. Johnson has converted on 73 of his 82 attempts from the foul line this season.
SHERIF KENNEY | ROCK CREEK CHRISTIAN
Sherif Kenney is easily the most physically imposing guard on this list, given his broad 6’4 frame. Along with his strength, Kenney displays a very impressive feel for the game, and can lock down defensively when engaged. Kenney, a self-proclaimed “winner”, dropped 28 on Capitol Christian for his 18-0 team.
EVAN BUCKLEY | STONE BRIDGE
Another candidate for “Most-Valuable” on this list, Evan Buckley is another guard who has really improved offensively. The tough & unselfish guard leads his team in both scoring (18.3) and assists (4.5), and is top second in rebounding and made threes. Bucknell, New Hampshire, and American have each extended recent scholarship offers to the hard-worker.
JOHNATHAN MCGRIFF | BISHOP MCNAMARA
In the absence of Jamir Moultrie, Johnathan McGriff was thrust into a primary backcourt role, and didn’t shy away from the pressure. McGriff, who looks like he’s grown an inch or two since the summer, leads the Mustangs in scoring.
JUDAH JORDAN| CAPITOL CHRISTIAN
Judah Jordan is the type of guard who does whatever his team needs to get a win. We saw him score 26 against a long & athletic Mountain Mission team. Jordan hit 13 of 15 free throws in that game. Penn State, Hampton, and Towson have each offered.
JAMES BISHOP | MOUNT ST. JOSEPH
As a starter for Mount St. Joseph, James Bishop has been an integral two-way factor in his team’s incredible 24-2 start. Bishop is a long, lanky guard who defends multiple positions. He’s a lefty with a smooth pull-up jumper, and the ability to get in the paint and mix it up.
