His role and playstyle is very similar to that of JJ Redick’s current role on the Clippers. Both are lights out shooters who make a living running their defenders off screens and hitting the open shot. He has D3 and NAIA interest, but I believe he could be effective at the D2 level.
Here’s my take on Havey’s game:
Strengths:
Shooting – He’s a pure shooter. He has good range, can shoot off the dribble, running off a screen or off the catch. Smooth and comfortable shot from any spot on the floor. Simply said, he’s a sniper.
Using screens – Whether it’s him running his defender off a screen or him using a pick with his dribble, Havey always seems to make plays off screens. He’s capable of driving to the rim or stepping back for a three, so he’s a tough matchup in a pick-and-roll situation.
Finishing – He has good touch around the rim. He’s capable of finishing through contact. Seems to frequently rebound his own misses in close and put them back for easy points. He has a nice floater and nice euro-step.
Basketball IQ – He knows the game well. He does a good job of cutting or moving to the open spot to free himself up for an open shot. He doesn’t turn it over at a high rate and does a good job limiting his mistakes. He knows how to rotate on defense and help.
Areas For Development:
Athleticism – He’s undersized for his position, so he will need to become more athletic if he wants to be an impact player at the next level. Specifically, he needs to work on elevating higher on his finishes around the rim. Also, becoming more athletic will help him become a better defender, which is something he will need to do at a high level in college.
Playmaking – His playmaking ability is actually sneakily good, but he needs to be able to create in a variety of ways. If he was 2 or 3 inches taller this wouldn’t be necessary, but since he’s only 6′ he will need to be able to play the point guard position. If he can become an all-around point guard in addition to his explosive shooting ability, he will be a lethal offensive player at the next level.
