TOPEKA, Kan. — One of the top uncommitted post players in the 2017 class, Shawnee Heights’ Poncho Freeman is putting together a big senior season.
A strong and physical 6-foot-3 power forward, Freeman is an aggressive player that doesn’t look to force shots and looks for his teammates and plays with heart and intensity.
He spent last summer playing with SSA Elite and says he was focused on getting back in shape rafter suffering an injury.
“I made sure to always push myself and force myself to do things I wasn’t comfortable with,” Freeman said.
Shawnee Heights is off to a 15-2 start this season and features two players who have already made college commitments in Trey Brown (Missouri Western) and Jesse Moss (Fort Scott CC).
“Our team plays well together because we’ve played with each other our whole lives, especially last summer so we know each others games really well,” Freeman said. “We know how to find the open man but we also know when we need a bucket who to go to. Almost everyone on our team can score whenever they want.”
Freeman says several graduated upperclassmen have helped his career so far.
“I don’t really have just one person but it’d have to be the seniors that graduated my sophomore year,” he said. “They always were on me and pushed me. They had alot of confidence in me and they helped me
with a lot of things. I looked up to them.”
Freeman says he is a fan of college basketball and the Kansas Jayhawks.
“I like watching college basketball more than anything because you can tell they play a lot harder and give more effort,” Freeman said. “Everything about it is better than the NBA … I watch for moves players that I think I could try and add them to my game someway. I watch film on some people too.”
Freeman says he has heard from several junior college programs and a few NCAA DIvision II programs as well.
He has taken a visit to Allen County and picked up a offer there and has also drawn interest from Baker University, Neosho and Hutchinson and plans to take a visit to Southwestern in the future.
