While these guys usually go overlooked by colleges, Oscar Smith sophomore big man Nyzaiah Chambers already holds multiple division one offers, and it’s his blue collar mentality that has coaches seeing him as a valuable asset at the next level.
“I feel like every team needs a player that can do a little bit of everything,” Chambers said. “I don’t just focus on scoring because I don’t want to be one dimensional. I like to play d, block shots, rebound hard and do the little things to help my team win.”
The 6’6” Chambers currently holds offers from Mount St. Mary’s, Radford and Norfolk State with ever increasing interest from programs such as College of Charleston, Arkansas State, Virginia Tech, JMU and others. While his defensive prowess and ability to man the middle are what makes him so impressive, he knows that he’ll have to continue to work on his offensive game if he wants to have early success at the division one level.
“I definitely need to work on my offensive game, work on my midrange jumper and be able to put it on the floor out of the triple threat,” Chambers said.
While much of Chambers’ success and recognition have come from his summers with Team Loaded 757, he’s been a big part of the resurgence of an Oscar Smith program that made it to the state championship last season before losing to Westfield. The Tigers lost their top two scorers in Donald Hicks and Dez Devane, however they’ve had an influx of scoring this season in senior transfer TJ Taylor (VSU commit) and freshman scoring sensation Cameron Thomas who leads Hampton Roads in scoring this season.
With scoring all around him, Chambers can continue to focus on what he does best, which is leading his team defensively. The Tigers are one of the favorites in 6A this year, but they know it won’t come easy.
“We have to play together, keep going hard in practice and continue to take things very seriously,” Chambers said.
Chambers and Oscar Smith will start Conference Tournament play next week. If they can make a big run in the state tournament, and Chambers can carry that momentum into the summer you could see him pull a lot more offers before it’s time for him to make his decision.
