Continue ReadingMack Smith has seen his stock increase moreso than maybe anyone in the state this year and a solid senior year has led to his first D1 offer just a few days ago from Eastern Illinois University. Smith is averaging 21.9 points a game against some of the toughest competition in Indiana and has already scored 319 points this season.
After scoring 34 points against North Central he scored 33 in a game against them two weeks later showing that he can continually put up big points against high level competition. Smith is shooting the ball at a 57 percent clip against these teams who are a combined 144-74 on the year, good for the second toughest schedule in the state according to John Harrell’s sagarin ratings.
One of the biggest improvements that Smith has shown this year is in his jump shot. He couldn’t rely on it as much last year but this year he can shoot it with the best shooters in the state. Another thing that he has really improved that may not be noticed is his leadership.
“I have become a leader and a more all-around scorer,” Smith said. “Mostly I have just become consistent. It’s not just about me it’s my whole team. We love playing with one another and they have my back and I will always have theirs.”
A 14-1 start to the season for Warren Central definitely has college coaches trying to see who is leading the team and performing well. Everyone on the team is playing well but Smith stands above the rest. This has contributed to an offer from Bethel College and his latest, a D1 offer from Eastern Illinois. Smith has been to a few different college games but no official visits other than the visit he took earlier this year to Bethel. The coaches that have seen Smith like a few different qualities of his game this year.
“(They) like that I’m not forcing anything and that I’m letting the game come to me. They also like how I’m being a leader and communicating with my team,” Smith said.
With a good start to the season Smith knows he must continue his good play in order for Warren Central to reach their goals this season as it comes to a close. With Smith leading the team it will be hard for someone to come along in the tournament and knock them off.
“I am looking forward to having fun with my team, learning new things and being the best I can be,” Smith said. “Most importantly making it as far as we can. Going to every game and treating it as if it is my last breath.”
In the future Smith is looking for a school where he can play basketball and wants to attend a school where he can either major in business, sports management, or sports medicine.
“I want an environment where I can always enjoy myself and a good group of guys that I can bond with and play well with,” Smith said.
