Continue ReadingSandusky High School has won 18 games this season, earning them the #1 seed in the Mansfield District in Division II. For 6’0” guard Jayrese Williams (2017), that’s not quite enough. You see, since even before this season started, Williams has had his sights on larger goals.
“Our sophomore year, we got to Bowling Green, in Regionals. Now, we want to get past that. We have a really good shot to get down there,” Williams said.
As far as his personal contributions to those potential achievements, Williams puts the ball in the basket. Even though he may play point guard next season, Williams is asked to create points for now.
In the half-court he can create off the isolation and score effectively from all three levels. But it’s in transition where Williams likes to do damage.
We asked him to break down his scoring repertoire.
“More of in transition, pushing the ball and outlets. And then on the wing, screen and roll action. Mid-range pull-ups. Transition threes,” Williams said.
Moving forward, Williams would like to improve at changing speeds and defending on the ball.
At the moment, Williams has a widespread set of junior colleges on his radar.
“Harcum Junior College in Philadelphia, they offered me. Vincennes University, and McLennan Junior College in Texas. One was, I talked to Lake Erie. I know, Heidelberg, they’re D-III, I talked to them. That’s pretty much it,” Williams said.
Williams went on to acknowledge a few more schools that have expressed interest, but he’s focused on those mentioned above.
“Junior college, you only get two years, so I want to make the best out of those two years,” Williams said.
He was candid about his own interest in Vincennes. Although they haven’t offered, Williams is hopeful that it’s coming.
“If they were to offer, they’d be my lead choice,” Williams said.
An up-tempo and ball-screen heavy style appeal to Williams, one of the reasons Vincennes has stuck out to him.
“I’m probably going to end up making that decision after basketball season,” Williams said.
In the meantime, you can check out his first tournament game on March 3 at Willard High School, against the winner of Bellevue and Clyde.
