Forest Lake’s been a lot better than expected this season. Jake Larson’s been the driving force behind that.
The senior point guard is having a monster year for the Rangers, averaging 20 points and five assists per game and his presence has the team in good position to make a deep run in the section tournament and perhaps get to state.
“We’ve done very well for what I expected,” said Larson. “We had a lot of new guys playing varsity minutes and guys have handled it well. We’ve been playing well lately.”
Larson’s drawn a lot of interest particularly from MIAC schools and said he’s narrowed his decision down and is hoping to make a decision within the next couple weeks.
“I’ve kind of narrowed it to Hamline and Augsburg; Bethel is still in there for me too,” Larson said. “Those are the three I’ve mainly talked to.”
Larson said he likes the opportunity for playing time Augsburg presents given the team is graduating two of its top guards. Playing time wouldn’t be as in abundance immediately at Hamline, but with a senior-heavy perimeter group next year, there would be ample opportunity to earn playing time as a freshmen than take the reigns as a sophomore going forward.
“Augsburg doesn’t have another point guard other than [Rogers senior guard and Augsburg commit, Matt Carik] so there’s a lot playing time available. Hamline has a lot of senior guards next year and minutes wouldn’t be out of the question but after that there’d be a lot of minutes too. I like both coaching staffs and I like the structure both teams seem to have.”
Larson said that while playing time is important, he also values a winning culture.
“Playing would be nice but I don’t want to walk into a losing situation just to play a lot right away,” said Larson. “Both of those teams are on the rise.”
Larson said he’ll likely make his decision in the coming weeks. For now, his focus is on trying to help his high school team go as far as they can.
“For us, it’s just a matter of putting two halves together,” said Larson. “We start out slow sometimes and in sections we have to make sure we don’t do that. I think our section is wide open. I think we’ve got a great chance to get to state.”
