Asheville High School has produced some high-level professional athletes including NFL players Leonard Little, Crezdon Butler and Johnny White. Former Tennessee point guard Pee-Wee Gash was one of the best basketball prospects out of WNC in the early 2000s. It is hard enough to make the roster as a freshman on the varsity level, better yet to make a impact in the scoring column every night.
Meet Tyrese Thompson, a 6-foot guard for the Cougars this season. The freshman averaged 10.9 points to go along with 2.9 rebounds per game for Asheville High School. Thompson had this to say about his first varsity season,”My freshman year I feel like I played pretty well I didn’t get to play to my full potential because I felt limited.”
One of the seniors on the Cougar basketball team is Trey Irby, a smooth shooting guard and a leader that Tyrece looked up to,”Trey was like a big brother to me I matured more being around him,” Thompson said.
This summer, Thompson is going to play with Asheville Big Time. “I’m playing with AshevilleBig Time this year. “I need to improve on my stamina defense and shooting off the dribble.”
According to Thompson, Callin Randolph of Mountain Heritage High School is another one of the top freshman in the area including himself.
