Johnny plays basketball at a high level. He tells me his best attribute is “breaking down defenders and getting to the basket”. Johnny’s crossover is incredible and being a guard, he uses his speed to beat his man one-on-one and finish. Johnny also tells me his “midrange (shots) off the dribble” is another area where he excels. Another impressive attribute about this young man is his desire to continue getting better and not settle with what he has. When I asked Johnny what he wants to improve on, his answer showed his passion. “I want to improve on everything until my game is as close to perfect as possible”. Johnny’s passion for excelling and strong work ethic make him one of the top unsigned players in the Dayton area.
Johnny’s success can be partially credited to the league he has played in. Meadowdale is a member of the Dayton City League and as a league member, face some of the best teams in Dayton, including Dunbar and Thurgood Marshall twice per season. I talked with Johnny about how playing in this league has helped prepare him for the next level. He told me it has helped him because “it taught me how to keep my composure in tough situations and how to not fold under pressure”. Many of these teams run half court or even full court traps for defense. These defenses can disrupt even the best guards. Johnny has demonstrated he can not only handle these types of defenses, but he can also attack and break down defenses with ease.
Many players in the Dayton City League are being recruited by colleges around the country. Johnny currently has no offers but tells me “I’ll continue to work and see where it goes from here”. With his work ethic and vast skill set, I definitely expect a school to offer Johnny Trigg very soon.
