Covington is a talented guard who can create a shot for himself and is capable of going on scoring spurts, but sees the floor well and is a willing and capable passer. He is currently averaging 11.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game.
Covington spent the offseason playing for Team KC and focused on improving his outside shot and being a more consistent performer.
Covington has teamed with Jalen Taylor to form a dynamic 1-2 punch and has helped lead Piper to a 17-2 start. The team is currently ranked No. 3 in the latest Kansas 4A-1 poll.
“Were all brothers,” he said. “We laugh like brothers we compete like brothers everyday. I would describe my play as doing whatever is needed to win for the night if it’s scoring then scoring or if it’s guarding the best opposing player or finding my teammate that’s hot or making it easier for everyone else.”
Covington said the season highlight for him was a game-winning shot by JJ xx against Bonner Springs and winning a Kaw Valley league title for the first time in more than a decade.
Covington says this biggest influence on his basketball career has been his grandparents.
“They have always been there for me and come to every game,” he said. “They believe in me when I need believing in and believe anything is possible.”
A fan of the Kansas Jayhawks, Covington says he enjoys watching guard Frank Mason.
“He’s not being the biggest guy by far on the court he gets it done every night for KU and is the leader of the team,” Covington said. “Very tough and exciting to watch.”
