Here is a look at the region semifinal slate for Tuesday night.
Region 1
Flagler Palm Coast at Oviedo
Last year, these two teams met in the region quarterfinal. Oviedo moved onto the next round but fell to Seminole the following week. Now, in a semifinal rematch, Oviedo (20-7) will look to get its three-headed monster going: senior Ivan Smith, sophomore Morgan Mitchell and senior Miguel Lopez. For Flagler Palm Coast (17-11), seniors Preston Harvey, Joel Wright and Fethener Aime lead the charge.
Wekiva at Boone
The last matchup between Wekiva and Boone came in a 2013 region quarterfinal that the Mustangs won. Boone (21-7) is led by junior Sean Halloran and seniors Justin Butler and Jordan Morales. Wekiva (23-5) has seniors Paul Reed and Ruben Sheppard and junior Tyrone Perry playing hard. This should be a close one between two hungry teams.
Region 4
North Miami vs. Pembroke Pines Charter (at Flanagan)
Pembroke Pines Charter beat American last week to advance while North Miami took down Miramar. However, in the 9A-District 14 Final, American beat North Miami, 55-53. So, now Pembroke Pines Charter has a chance to win as an underdog again. Seniors Malik Hardy and Wolkims Exameau are the leaders for the Jaguars (15-9). North Miami (20-6) has sophomore Richard Charles and juniors Donte Innocent and Reynauld Laurent in front.
South Miami at Miami Palmetto
Miami Palmetto had to battle to move past Coral Gables, 63-61 in three overtimes last week. Junior Mikal Starks and sophomore Jordan Hamburger are the captains for this Panther group (20-7). Seniors Zack Dawson and Latravian Glover are both committed to Oklahoma State and both are fine players for the Cobras (22-3).
Region 2
Dr. Phillips at Oak Ridge
Sophomore Niven Glover and junior Michael Devoe are two highly athletic guards that keep Oak Ridge going each game. The Pioneers (21-4) are in the regional round for the seventh time in eight seasons. They’ll host a scrappy Dr. Phillips (19-6) team led by junior Daniel Love and senior forward Nick Smith. Oak Ridge is the favorite, but never rule out the Panthers, they’ve been playing hard all season long.
Osceola at Treasure Coast
For Osceola (26-2), the top team in 9A, they haven’t lost since Dec. 28 against The Rock. The Kowboys are on a 16-game winning streak as senior Brady Fernandes and sophomores Omar Payne and Isaiah Palermo have carried the team. Treasure Coast (22-3) isn’t a team to take lightly however with seniors Charles Grandison and Jewell Butler and sophomore Tyrec Thompson. The Titans haven’t lost since Dec. 30 and are on a 13-game winning streak.
Region 3
Wellington at Lake Worth
Wellington (25-3) has Illinois commit Trent Frazier at the forefront of the team. The senior guard is a pure scorer and someone who attacks at will. Senior Sage Chen-Young and junior Bryan Williams have been steady for the Wolverines. Junior Marques Spann and sophomore Avery Brookes are two talented pieces for Lake Worth (24-5).
Deerfield Beach at Coral Springs
Senior Edwin Louis has been phenomenal for Deerfield Beach (21-5) all season long while fellow seniors Calvin Davis and Macus Brave have stepped up when called upon. Sophomore Jelani Heard and junior Kenny Lucien have been everything for Coral Springs (19-7). The Colts have won three straight games by one-point including the district final against Deerfield Beach.
