Small communities often get very excited when they have the chance to support one of their own. The town of Nevis is no different, as Griffin Chase received more than 5,400 votes for Player Of The Week, presented by the Intensive Basketball Camp.
Griffin scored 31 points earlier in the week against Cass Lake-Bena, and he rounded out the weekend by passing 2,000 career points against Walker-Hackensack-Akeley. Both were wins, and Nevis moved on to an 18-1 record. Nevis was ranked No. 3 in Class A by Northstar Hoops last week.
“The season is going great so far,” Chase said. “Better than what people probably expected. We’ve snuck out a couple of close ones, but this next week will be a good challenge for us. We play a section game on Tuesday against Verndale, and then we have a big one against Red Lake on Friday.”
Concordia-Moorhead and Briar Cliff have been in contact with Griffin about playing college basketball, and Jamestown has offered. But Chase has his eyes on what you could call his “dream school.”
“Both of my parents graduated from Bemidji State and it’s pretty close to where I live. I’ve always gone to their games so it would be pretty great if I had the opportunity to play there. It just feels like a nice place where I could fit in. I’m going to try and meet with the BSU football and basketball coaches in a couple of weeks or once the season is over.”
Chase enjoys both sports, but he thinks he would prefer to play basketball in college. Check out some highlights of his from Lakeland News.
