Robinson HS boasts the top player in North Carolina in the senior class with VCU signee Lavar Batts Jr. Batts is a multidimensional point guard that had offers from Oklahoma, Butler, Clemson, Georgia, Florida State and Nebraska before deciding on a final two of Clemson and VCU.
After a official visit to the Richmond, Virginia campus, head coach Will Wade got a commitment from Batts to attend VCU. Batts fits in well with the “HAVOC” basketball scheme that Wade and VCU play. He should see immediate playing time at VCU once he arrives on campus with the Rams losing senior point guard JeQuan Lewis when the 2016-2017 season comes to an end.
Both squads are 19-7 overall this season. Jay M. Robinson is the defending NCHSAA 3-A state champion. North Buncombe boasts one of the best senior guards in the area with David Elkins. The 5-foot-10 guard can score from almost anywhere on the floor and has a high basketball IQ.
Erwin HS vs North Henderson HS-Another match-up in the second round with 3-A teams, this one boasts two of the highest scoring players in the area. North Henderson has Austin Nelson, a 6-foot-5 scoring guard/do-it-all guy and Erwin HS features CJ Thompson, a 5-foot-8 lightning quick point guard. Both have had games in the 40’s this season while leading their team to the playoffs. Nelson recently surpassed 2,000 career points for his career and picked up his first Division One offer from USC-Upstate. Thompson is a all-state wide receiver on the football field and has said he wants to play football in college.
