That means that we are heading down the final stretch of the season here in Louisiana, and within the next two weeks, we will be crowning 12 brand new state champions. If you read the first round previews, you will have seen that we have hit more than 80% of our predictions. Now I’m not a betting man, but I like those odds. We are going to be continuing those previews and predictions here, moving on to Division I, which because of the split is only 12 teams deep. That means to win a state championship, you just have to be better than 11 other teams.
- Catholic BR vs. 9. Holy Cross
These two teams have already played each other, back in November, with Catholic BR coming out on top 60-53. However, since then, Catholic has slid quite a bit, most noticeably during their district slate, winning only three games. I think that will have a concrete effect on Catholic’s confidence, and Holy Cross will avenge that loss.
PHLA Pick: Holy Cross
- McKinley vs. 12. Archbishop Rummel
McKinley was able to get a big win in this game that was played a day earlier than anticipated, by a score of 64-37. If junior star PG Tyrece Radford weren’t out for the season, I would be much higher on McKinley’s chances at making a run down the stretch, but without him I think they will be falling sooner than expected.
PHLA Pick: McKinley
- John Curtis vs. 13. Archbishop Shaw
This is another game that was played a day early, and I am a bit surprised by the result. I thought that Latrell Jones and Shaw would be able to keep the game much closer than they were able to, leading to a 82-40 win for John Curtis.
PHLA Pick: John Curtis
- Brother Martin vs. 11. Jesuit
This is another game that got played a very games ahead of schedule, only because literally every single team got a first round bye. There are only 12 teams in all of Division I. Brother Martin was able to beat up on fellow New Orleans Catholic League member Jesuit 56-45.
PHLA Pick: Brother Martin
- C.E. Byrd vs. 10. Evangel Christian
This is the final game of the second round in Division I and it really isn’t of any major consequence. Neither of these teams are going to be winning a state championship. However, I still think that Byrd gets the win because Evangel isn’t going to have the athletes to keep up on the basketball court. The football field would be a totally different story.
PHLA Pick: C.E. Byrd
