With the postseason upon us and the regular season winding down, it is time to start awarding all-conference honors. I will be honoring several all-conference teams in the Dayton area. Today I am honoring my 1st team all-conference for the SWBL Southwestern division. (Note: The SWBL is split into two divisions: Southwestern and Buckeye. This article will cover one of the divisions and a future article will cover the other).
Jacob Gudorf (Brookville)- 7.7 PPG, 6.1 AST, 3.9 REB, 2.1 STL
Jacob was a defensive presence for the Blue Devils that helped guide them to a second place finish in the division this season. Jacob led the league in assists and had season highs of 10 assists three times. Although not known for scoring in large amounts, he had a season high 17 points against a very talented Franklin team. Defensively, Jacob was fourth in the league in steals. Only a sophomore, I expect Jacob to continue to improve and lead Brookville next season.
Danny Howard (Eaton)- 8.9 PPG, 10.2 REB, 2.1 BLK, 0.9 AST
Danny is a low post superstar capable of grabbing 10 or more rebounds every night. This young man led the league in rebounds with 10.2 and grabbed a season high 14 rebounds three times this season. Danny also finished in the top 5 in blocks as well recording a season high 4 against Talawanda. Being a senior, Danny will be missed by Eaton next year.
Tristan Backas (Monroe)- 16.2 PPG, 10.0 REB, 2.2 BLK, 2.1 AST, 51.9% FG
Tristan is a future star in the SWBL. This young man is only a junior yet he was in the top 5 in several categories in the league. Tristan finished in the top three in the league in scoring and blocks and finished second in rebounds. Tristan scored double digits in all but two games this season and recorded multiple double-doubles. I expect him to be league leader in all three categories next season.
Ryan Montgomery (Franklin)- 11.5 PPG, 5.5 REB, 3.0 AST, 2.6 STL
Ryan was a major part of Franklin’s success this season. He finished in the top 2 in steals in the league. He had a season high 27 points against Bellbrook and recorded a season high in steals against Valley View with 6. With Ryan returning next season for his senior year, I expect even better statistics for him.
Payton Knott (Franklin)- 11.8 PPG, 4.5 AST, 1.5 STL, 39.5% 3PT
Payton is another young guard that helped Franklin win a Southwestern division title this season. Payton finished third in the league in assists. Besides being known for helping his teammates score, he also can knock down the 3 point shot. In fact, in a game against Tri-County North, Payton went 6 for 6 from beyond the arc and recorded 22 points in the win. With Payton returning alongside Ryan Montgomery, expect Franklin to be a strong contender next season.
Zach Haeseker (Valley View)- 11.1 PPG, 3.4 AST, 4.8 REB, 2.1 STL, 43.1% 3PT
Zach was a big reason why the Spartans went from a 13-10 record a year ago to 15-7 this season and finishing a game behind Brookville for second place. A top 5 finisher in steals defensively, Zach offensively used his outside shooting to lead the Spartans in scoring. His season high was 19 in a game against Eaton. Since he is a senior, Valley View will look to replace Zach next season as they attempt to challenge Franklin for a division title.
