With the postseason upon us and the regular season winding down, it is time to start awarding all-conference honors. I will be honoring several all-conference teams in the Dayton area. Today I am honoring my 1st team all-conference for the GWOC National East divison. (Note: The GWOC is split into four separate divisions: American North, American South, National East and National West. This specific article will focus on one division and future articles will cover the other three).
Danny Davis (Springfield)- 18.8 PPG, 6.6 REB, 5.7 AST, 2.9 STL, 51.3% FG, 43.0% 3PT
Danny was a high-scoring star for the Springfield Wildcats this season. He finished in the top 5 in the conference in scoring, assists, and steals. Specifically, Danny is known for his fantastic three point shooting. His range is incredible and he has been known to knock down shots from college range. Danny will be expected to help lead Springfield this postseason as the Wildcats try and make a deep run into March. Danny will be playing football at the University of Wisconsin next year.
Keegan Saben (Centerville)- 16.3 PPG, 3.6 REB, 2.4 AST, 1.5 STL, 52.8% FG
Keegan was a senior leader for the Elks. He has the ability to beat his man one-on-one as well as a very nice mid-range jumper. Defensively, Keegan was one of the best on-the-ball defenders in the conference. He played physical on defense, and he also showed his aggressive mentality grabbing rebounds. Keegan was a huge reason why Centerville has been competitive the past 3 years and he will be missed next season. He will play college ball at West Liberty University next year.
L’Christian Smith (Wayne)- 17.0 PPG, 10.0 REB, 60.3% FG, 1.4 STL, 0.9 AST
L’Christian was a great asset to a Wayne team that was plagued with injuries and struggled parts of the season. Averaging a double-double per game, L’Christian used his offensive and defensive skills to help lead the Warriors. Offensively, L’Christian used his size to beat defenders one-on-one and finish in the paint. On the defensive end, besides being an incredible rebounder, he was able to defend his opponent’s guards or forwards. L’Christian is only a junior and will be expected to lead the Warriors next season. He is verbally commited to play football at the University of Cincinnati.
Michael McKay (Springfield)- 15.5 PPG, 3.6 REB, 3.4 AST, 40% 3PT, 52.8% FG, 2.2 STL
In the East division, there are plenty of great point guards. Michael is another one of them. He was part of a senior backcourt at Springfield, alongside Danny Davis, that finished first in the East division this year. Michael is a strong offensive weapon with the ability to knock down the three point shot or assist one of his teammates. He currently holds a few offers but is uncommitted.
Jack Hendricks (Fairmont)- 16.6 PPG, 0.9 AST, 0.8 STL, 39.4% 3PT, 1.8 REB
Besides Danny Davis, Jack Hendricks may be the best three point shooter in the East division. He is able to knock down the long range shot off the dribble or in a catch-and-shoot situation. Only a junior, Jack has potential to be the best shooter in the conference next season as a senior for the Firebirds. After a rough season this year, I expect Jack and Fairmont to improve next season.
Leonard Taylor (Springfield)- 12.1 PPG, 9.3 REB, 2.1 STL, 1.4 AST, 0.4 BLK
Leonard has the potential to grab a double-double whenever he steps on the floor. He was one of the top 5 rebounders in the conference this season. Leonard provided the Wildcats with a strong defensive presence whether it be rebounding or on-the-ball. Leonard will be looked to for leadership next season as a senior, especially since the Wildcats are losing Michael McKay and Danny Davis this year.
