Class 4A also has a lot of sleeper players who have not received a bunch of attention, but their play has certainly warranted it. Below Prep Hoops looks at Area I in Class 4A with predictions and top players.
Three players to watch
Jett Sternberger 2019 Kingfisher Point Guard
Sternberger is a great shooter from behind the arc who is starting to really show his improvements on the court this year. Kingfisher has had a great season behind the sophomore’s scoring talents.
Les Thomas 2017 Heritage Hall Shooting Guard
When Thomas is shooting the ball well from the floor he is virtually unstoppable in Class 4A. Over his career at Heritage Hall, Thomas has had a terrific career on the Wing. He is starting to be recruited hard by JUCO, Division II and even some Low Major Division I programs.
Tanner Meraz 2017 Elgin Combo Guard
Meraz lit the scoreboard up in the Regional Championship game against Kingfisher. He is a sniper from three-point range. Meraz is going to make a small college very happy with his scoring talents.
Predictions
Area Championship: Anadarko vs Elgin
Anadarko is a team that was expected to be in this position with a top 8 ranking for most of the season. Elgin on the other hand entered the playoffs not even ranked. Can Elgin continue their hot streak? Not so fast. Anadarko gets it done and punches their ticket to state with their impressive guards.
Area Consolation Games
Heritage Hall vs John Marshall
John Marshall has some young talent. Heritage Hall is loaded with seniors who have been through the fire of the playoffs. Look for Les Thomas and Sayvon Milton to be determined to make the state tournament. Heritage Hall advances.
Kingfisher vs Elk City
Coming off a tough loss is always tough. Kingfisher must get the loss out of their heads and do all they can to make a playoff push towards state. Elk City is not slouch. With that said Kingfisher wins this one with the hot shooting of sophomores Jett Sternberger and Trey Green.
Kingfisher vs Heritage Hall
This matchup is not even for a state tournament spot. Crazy I know. If we end up with this game it will be one of the best games of the playoffs in Class 4A. The key in this one is what pace is the game played at? Kingfisher has had a great year, but there is something to be said about a group of seniors wanting to taste the state tournament one more time. Heritage Hall advances.
Heritage Hall vs Elgin
Three games in three days will be tough for Heritage Hall. Elgin will come into this game with their legs under them having only played once. Heritage Hall is clearly on paper the more talented team. Elgin has found ways to win all season despite being the underdog, they love the underdog role. Heritage Hall finds a way to come through the consolation side and win. The Chargers go to state.
Two for state out of Class 4A Area I
