Ryghe Lyons 6’8 PF John Curtis (Nicholls St.)
Lyons jumped onto the scene over the summer, after a very successful grassroots season, playing for the New Orleans Wolves, and continued that success into his high school season for John Curtis, earning himself a D1 scholarship signing with Nicholls St. The long 6’8 forward has the ability to stretch the floor and knowck down corner threes, as well as protecting the rim on defense. The biggest knock on his game is that he gets pushed around on the block too often, but if Nicholls St. can put some weight on him and get him stronger, he can be very successful at the next level.
Chris Osten 6’8 C Crowley (LSUA)
It seems like Osten grows every single time I see him. Since last year he has put on another two inches, and might not even be done growing yet. Osten has been a dominant defensive anchor for Crowley this year, using his outstanding length and sneaky athleticism to affect every shot that is taken in his paint. Offensively he isn’t relied on to do much else other than get putback dunks and dumpdowns, so I am interested to see how he handles being more of a focus point on offense in the future. He has a smooth stroke from the FT line, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he will be able to stretch the floor for LSUA next year.
Nate Cox 6’8 PF St. Thomas More
Cox is another player that has continued to grow as he gets older, adding an extra inch or two since last season. Cox has spent the last few years learning behind fellow big man William Vincent, and Cox has excelled in his much larger role for the Cougars this year. Cox is more than capable of extending his range beyond the three point line, and excelles as a stretch shooter and screen setter. Cox was also the quarterback on the Cougars state champion football team, and has shown the ability to play at the next level in either sport.
Tyquan Marshall 6’6 F St. Martinville
In years past, Marshall was mostly a back to the basket, low post threat, playing next to current LSUA freshman center, 6’9 Javante Walker. This season, as the main offensive threat for St. Martinville, Marshall has shown the ability to step out and operate at the high post and beyond the arch, taking his defender off the dribble as well as the ability to knock down the open three.
Myles Hutchinson
Hutchinson is the final new addition to this iteration of the 2017 rankings, and has shown flashes of being a complete point guard. The first thing that you will notice about Hutchinson is his length and insane leaping ability for someone his size. He routinely out rebounds and blocks shots of players with 5-6 inches of height on him. The next thing you will notice is how easily he fills up the box sheets, with his ability to score in bunches, as well as the ability to find the open man. With his athleticism and length, he has the ability to be a very pesky and lockdown defender.
