“Evansville has called my high school coach,” said Christian Fields. “I got letters and stuff from EKU.”
Eastern Kentucky Head Coach Dan McHale has aggressively targeted regional players after earning his coaching position. In addition to Class of 2017 signees Peyton Broughton and former Kentucky-resident A.J. Youngman, Coach McHale welcomed back Jackson Davis to his home state.
For an OVC program, EKU has a decently deep frontcourt (Nick Mayo, Zach Charles, DeAndre Dishman, Lachlan Anderson). Would Fields fit into such a rotation?
It depends on the preferred structure of the defense under Coach McHale. Does he want to continue four-out, one-in or utilize dual-posts like conference foes Tennessee State and Belmont?
Like EKU, Northern Kentucky University is at least aware of 2018 forward Christian Fields.
“NKU coach emailed me and invited me to their elite camp this past summer,” said Fields. “He said something about me coming up for an unofficial visit.”
Fields Season
Madisonville North Hopkins drew Caldwell County in the opening round.
“We want to win district and win region,” said Christian Fields. “We beat (Caldwell County) both times by like 20 or 30.”
On a personal level, Fields is getting some time on the wing. He likes operating around the arc and wants to continue to develop that aspect of his game.
“I am about 6-foot-6,” said Christian Fields. “They are playing me at the wing. The 3/4/5. I really like playing the 3 for them.”
The temptation for high school coaches is to play tweeners under the tin, hoping to capitalize on their bigger player’s size. Rebounding is vital to success and Fields can help there.
North Hopkins Head Coach Matt Beshear and the development of Christian Fields really benefit from Ksuan Casey. The 6-foot-8 young man allows Fields to attack from outside more often.
“I am fine with my back towards the basket, but I like pulling up,” said Fields. “The one-dribble pull-up is my favorite thing to do.”
AAU Plans
Again Christian Fields intends to play AAU with Hoop Dreams. He doesn’t know what position he will play with the Hoop Dreams squad.
“That is one thing I am not sure about,” said Fields. “Last year they played me at the 4/5 more because Dontaie Allen would start at the 3. J.J. Weaver would play at the 5.”
Last summer this Hoop Dreams 15u team was strong. With the expected 16u roster likely to resemble a more physically matured version of that team the anticipation is high from Program Director Michael Scott.
It is a big year for all 16u players, including Christian Fields.
