This is always an exciting time as we get the chance to see old rivals seek out specific matchups and others beginning new rivalries as each respective team attempts to advance. “Playoff” basketball is always tagged as more fun to watch due to the obvious win or go home nature of the games being played. This creates the most passionate atmospheres and usually delivers multiple instant classic moments. A look at some random observations from the seeds and brackets:
Sterling Manley of Pickerington Central H.S.* Columbus #1 District – #3 Hilliard Bradley, #4 Upper Arlington, #5 Northland, & #7 Groveport are all in the same bracket, which was surprising to me to say the least. This will look very similar to the one Region of the NCAA Division One Tournament that always seems to appear to be a tougher road than the rest. Tons of talent in this region and the potential for some true barnburner games to see who advances.
* Potential Westerville South vs Pickerington Central matchup after the District Finals. This game could end up being one for the ages if both teams can get to this point. The contest would feature the two high-major signees in Sterling Manley and Kaleb Wesson, but also would have unsigned scholarship talent in future classes all over the map from Jeremiah Francis down to any and all levels of play.
* Who has the best chance of winning a district title outside of the Big 6: Pickerington Central, Newark, Upper Arlington, Northland, and Westerville South? Is it Groveport, St. Charles, Pickerington North, Reynoldsburg, or someone else??? The vast majority of choices for the four district titles come from the six school list above. If there is a true Cinderella type of team this year, who gets it done?
All questions will be answered as game play starts soon for one of the most exciting times of the year.
