Breaking Down Latest Cantrall Team Rankings (Top 5)
Dave Cantrall (via Lexington Herald-Leader) has released his Top 25 KHSAA teams this week. PHKY breaks down the top five teams going into region tournament play.
1.) Scott County (27-5)
Returning to the #1 spot, the Cardinals of Scott County head into the 11th region tournament on a 15 game winning steak, winning 19 of their last 21 games. They defeated Lexington Sayre in the 42nd district tournament championship by 34, Bryan Station by 24 in the first game of the tournament, and defending state champion Dunbar by 30 in the last regular season game of the season. Scott County is led by sophomore sensation Michael Moreno, who is averaging 23 points and 10 rebounds.
2.) Bowling Green (29-2)
Region tournament play started early on the western side of the state. Bowling Green won their 4th region first round game against Barren County tonight 62-45. They will play the winner of Franklin-Simpson/Russell County next week. Bowling Green is led by Austin Peay commit Terry Taylor, who is averaging 17.5 points and 11 rebounds. 8th grade star Zion Harmon is also contributing nicely, averaging 16.3 points per game.
3.) Louisville Trinity (28-3)
Trinity knocked off St. Xavier tonight by 29 in their first round region game. They will try to ride their 11 game winning streak to another victory on Thursday against Ballard. Jayden Scrubb leads the Shamrocks with an average of 16 points and 4 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard David Johnson received some huge news earlier this week when Scout.com listed him as one of the top 50 players in the country.
4.) Fern Creek (30-2)
The Tigers defeated DeSales in their first round 6th region game 82-68. Led by senior wing Chance Moore (17 points per game and 5 rebounds), Fern Creek beat 7th region foe and #3 Trinity back in January 65-58. Their schedule has prepared them for a deep run and a chance to make some noise at Rupp Arena this year.
5.) Covington Catholic (27-5)
Undefeated in 9th Region play, the Colonels look to make yet another run to the Kentucky Sweet Sixteen. If the regular season is any indication of what the tournament could look like, fans may want to start buying tickets now. The Colonels are led by senior Cole VonHandorf and junior C.J. Fredrick. VonHandorf is a Fairmont State University commit averaging 18 points per game. C.J. Fredrick has a number of Division I offers and is averaging 21 points per game.
