Over the next week or so, we will be doing a “Best Available” series, giving coaches an idea of what kids are available and what kind of style they play in.
We continue as we look at five big men in the rest of the state that are still available. Stay tuned for more best available pieces moving forward. (Note: This list is in no particular order and in no way represents any rankings of any kind.)
Admir Besovich | 6’11” | Virginia Episcopal School
The kid is 6’11” and still available, so if you’re willing to look past some of the flaws and work with him on them he could end up as a steal. The Bosnian native came over stiff, and while he still isn’t there he’s getting up and down the floor and looks better within the flow of the game. His size itself makes him an impact defensively, and if he can continue to improve on his athleticism and finishing ability around the rim he could be a scholarship steal.
Dominique Joyce | 6’5” | Patrick Henry
Joyce has the right mindset after some questioned it early, and his versatility at 6’5” is extremely intriguing. He can run the floor and finish in transition, is very active with his length in pressing scenarios and he can rebound. When he’s taking care of the basketball he can be a good facilitator in the paint and in transition as well.
Armadius Jones | 6’5” | GW Danville
Talk about under the radar, Jones could be a steal if he goes to a prep school or JUCO. He has an average skill set but he has things you can’t teach such as length, athleticism and a high motor. He works in the paint on the glass and can guard multiple positions defensively. He’s also from a winning program, which is always a good thing for a recruit.
John Saunier | 6’7” | Jefferson Forest
Saunier is an old fashion back to the basket big man who has a variety of moves to score in the paint. He can shoot the jump hook, hit the offensive glass and can knock down the midrange jump shot making him a weapon in pick-and-pop situations. He isn’t great in an up and down system and tends to get in foul trouble, but he has a lot of skill set in the post for a guy his size.
Baker Haviland | 6’7” | Cave Spring
Haviland plays somewhat like Saunier but his build is more lean. He’s strong with the basketball in the paint, and he rebounds everything in his area. He can score in the paint with his back to the basket or he can face up and knock down the midrange. He’s also a great student that has works hard both on and off the court.
