Best Available: Athletic Wings
With the end of the 2017 high school basketball season right around the corner, there are still plenty of talented collegiate prospects that are available to fit a number of different systems. Over the next week or so, we will be doing a “Best Available” series, giving coaches an idea of what kids are available and what kind of style they play in.
We continue as we look at seven athletic wings that are still available. Stay tuned for more best available pieces moving forward. (Note: This list is in no particular order and in no way represents any rankings of any kind.)
Jayden Nixon | 6’3” | St. Anne Belfield
Nixon is as recruitable of a kid that’s left in the state. The 6’3” wing is athletic, hard working and he’s intelligent both on and off the court, sporting an impressive 4.0 GPA. He has improved in almost all facets of the game over the past three seasons, especially in his ability to shoot it. He works well in a system getting shots within the flow of the offense, but he’s also good in transition where he can finish above the rim. He’s also a capable defender that can guard multiple positions and will make plays all over the court.
Jimmel Davis | 6’5” | Warhill
He’s long, athletic and has a high motor, which makes him the perfect role player on a team. He can score without a play being called for him simply by running the floor and hitting the offensive glass. He defends multiple positions, can come help side to contest shots and always seems to be around the basketball on both ends of the floor.
Terrence Whitfield | 6’3” | Matoaca
He’s likely going to college to play football, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t be a scholarship athlete in basketball as well. He has great size and a strong frame, and he’s a freak athlete in transition where he continuously throws down highlight reel dunks. He plays hard on both ends, can defend multiple positions and create plays for both himself and his teammates. His upside in both sports is through the roof.
Lance Tebay | 6’5” | Bishop Sullivan
The First Team All TCIS selection had a big senior season for Bishop Sullivan, showing more consistency in the flashes he showed as an underclassman. Tebay has good size and athleticism, and he can shoot the basketball from all three levels. When he’s active and hitting the glass, he can typically be one of the most versatile and productive players on the floor.
Marcus Cherry | 6’3” | South Lakes
It’s safe to say that Cherry is under the radar, and wherever he’ll end up he’ll work his way into an impact role. The Conference 6 Player of the Year has been great on both ends of the floor, and his ability to step up in crunch time is something you can’t teach. He’s great in transition where he can finish at the basket, he can play and guard multiple positions and he’s a leader to underclassmen both vocally and by action.
Jordan Adams | 6’0” | Annandale
Adams is the typical high motor, slightly undersized wing that brings energy to both sides of the basketball. He can finish in transition, guard multiple positions and scores it pretty well in isolation situations. He’s improved on his shooting from deep and decision making, and he has a great frame to play multiple positions at the next level.
Diamante Brown | 6’3” | Jamestown
Under the radar doesn’t begin to describe Brown, who can play on the wing or inside. In Jamestown’s four out set he works perfectly, because he’s skilled enough to take bigs outside and work them out on an island. He’s a big time defender and shot blocker, someone who can lock up the 1-4, and his versatility offensively makes him a big asset to have. He’s been huge for Jamestown all season.
