Continue ReadingThe St. Louis area is enjoying a resurgence in the last five years. The suffered dip in high-end talent abruptly concluded with Jayson Tatum (Duke), Tyler Cook (Iowa) and continues into the coming classes.
Mario McKinney, Yuri Collins, Keyyan Batchman, and Amorey Womack represent the city’s pleasant 2019 class.
McKinney and Womack maintain a friendship. Both are experiencing early D1 connections too.
Who has reached out to Womack and his coach already?
“The Arkansas coach that talked with (Maplewood HC) Corey Frazier was coach Scotty Thurman, and the University of Missouri coaches were Kim Anderson and Rob Fulford, not sure who the Butler coach was,” said Womack’s father Quentin Womack. “Also, mild interest shown from Marquette (Assistant) Coach Chris Carrawell and St. Louis University (Assistant Coach) Corey Tate.”
Under Coach Frazier, Womack is having a strong sophomore season.
The 6-foot-1 guard is averaging approximately 16 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 3 spg.
“Season has going pretty good,” said Amorey Womack. “We are a young team. We only have one senior on the team and two juniors. Last year, before I came, they had only four wins. This year we are 12-13.”
Womack kind of slides between the one and the two. He projects as a combo guard capable of scoring or defending two spots.
With a naturally strong body, Womack frustrates dribblers. He can deny driving lanes and hold his ground firmly. The footwork of Womack is very good for a player of his thickness. He should be able to carry more weight without dropping off defensively.
This spring Womack intends to run with Bradley Beal Elite/St. Louis Eagles 16u squad. Generally the Eagles reign supreme in the St. Louis Metro area, but Jets-Ramey United boast a powerful challenge in the 17u category thanks to Courtney Ramey (Louisville verbal), Gavin Pinkley, and others.
Womack’s high school coach, Corey Frazier is also a coach with Bradley Beal Elite. This connection and Womack’s development as a player ensure he will make the squad.
Powerful Legacy
Amorey is carving out his own path, but his father played basketball with Jahidi White, Chris Carrawell, and Loren Woods in the 90’s. His football focus took him away from the hardwood later.
“He played high school basketball and then he played college football,” said Womack of his father. “He was going to the draft, but I think he went to military.”
The son has absorbed valuable career advice from his father already. They talked about the eventual college decision and priorities.
“He said it is pretty much up to me,” said Womack. “I should focus on the school before I focus on the court. He says to go all out because you never know when the opportunities won’t be there any more.”
Amorey’s first cousin, Xavier currently competes with Cardinal Ritter High School.
Xavier Womack leads Cardinal Ritter and attracted a December offer from Fort Scott Community College. Penn Valley College extended an offer last week. Johnson County College is involved.
The coming years will introduce another family member to the college basketball ranks. Amorey has a bright future and his work ethic is already paying off. Look for strong numbers from him out on the AAU trail.
