The Division 6A(big schools) final 4 is in the books with the Basha Bears moving on to meet the Corona Del Sol Aztecs in the state final. Basha has been the most balanced team with great defense, solid interior play and outside shooting while Corona primarily relies on its two all world Division I signees (see below) to be better than the other team’s starting five. Let’s take a look at the all final 4 team.
Most Outstanding: Saben Lee (Sr. Guard Corona) Lee was simply unstoppable scoring 39 points with drives to the hoop. Both he and his teammates met with a lot of resistance in the first half going up against Cesar Chavez’s much larger front line. But much like how a steady drip of water can wear a hole in a rock he persisted and in the second half was able to break the game open with his ballhandling and athleticism.
Assassin: Alex Barcello (Sr. Guard Corona)- Knocked to the ground several times in the first half and couldn’t buy a foul (or a bucket) but never complained. Goes about his business with the calmness of a trained assassin knowing he can get his whenever he wants to. His midrange pull up jumper is the best in the state as he reaches the 3rd title game of his high school career before heading off to Arizona University.
Strongest: Gabe McGlothan (Sr. Center Basha)- 17 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. His presence in the lane offensively and defensively means he always has to be accounted for. Desert Vista often committed 2 people to help keep him from getting the ball and he still ended up with nearly 20 points.
All Around: Caleb Simmons (Sr. Forward Desert Vista): Played a great all around game scoring 19pts, (5-10 from the field and 7 of 8 from the line). The 6-6 small forward showed why he was a high major prospect being a varsity strter since his freshman year scoring two quarter ending buzzer beating 3’s and finishing on drives to the hoop.
All Around: Michael Rogers (Jr. Guard Cesar Chavez)- One of the greatest football prospects in the state, Rogers’ strong drives to the basket and spot up 3 point shooting led the guard to 19 points. He not only was an offensive force but a defensive one as well contributing 2 blocks and 2 steals in the Champions loss to the Aztecs.
Most Explosive: Wesley Harris(Jr. Forward Desert Vista)- didn’t have a great game from a statistical perspective but the plays he makes shows he’s the most superior athlete on the floor at any given time. Essentially jumping over a defender for a two-handed baseline dunk or blocking a 3 point field goal into the stands.
Bench Player: Eric Blackwell (Frosh G Corona)-gave the Aztecs solid minutes off the bench scoring 14 points o a team where not much is expected beyond their two division 1 signee superstars at guard (Lee and Barcello).
The championship game takes place 7pm Tuesday night February 28th, 2017 at Grand Canyon University.
