Johnston — The Dragons picked up a huge win over what had been a red-hot Des Moines Hoover squad last Friday, and closed out their regular season with what has to be a major confidence builder. Johnston had been hot coming into that game, and it heads into the postseason winners of seven straight. A big and talented group, the Dragons could make a lot of noise in the next couple of weeks; they’ll face Ames on Friday in a tough substate semifinal match.
Kuemper — In 2A it’s Carroll Kuemper that has been coming on especially strong of late. Matt Dentlinger and Co. have been one of the best teams in Iowa all season, and are currently riding an eight-game win streak; including tough ones over Bishop Heelan and Atlantic. They’ll try and inch one step closer to state tonight, in a district final against IKM-Manning.
Boone — It’s now 11 wins and counting that marks the Toreadors current streak, which includes a 26-point shellacking of Humboldt to start their potential march through the postseason. Senior Ethan Lewis had been leading the charge all season, and John Herrick and Tanner Schminke provide some nice star-power to boot.
Down
Fort Dodge — Senior Solomon Clayton is one of the best players in the CIML, and The Dodgers showed plenty of promise in the early part of the season; but seemingly ran out of gas late. Last night, in the opening round of substate, the Dodgers fell to Des Moines East on on a Cameron Cramer buzzer-beater. It was just East’s fourth win, and one of the biggest upsets in Iowa this season.
Waterloo East — The Trojans season ended last night in the opening round of substate; a 13-point loss to a very formidable Mason City squad. Waterloo East had lost its last five straight coming into that game. The good news is, the Trojans have a bright young star coming back for his junior season with Tyrese Nickelson.
Saydel — It was no surprise that the Eagles lost it’s opening district game to Pella last night; it was a bit of a surprise that they lost by 50 (90-40). Saydel was just one of six teams in Iowa which finished the season without a win (0-22).
