Carlisle: It’s now five wins and counting for a red-hot Carlisle team, and it’s been some quality competition they’ve been beating up on. Last week they took down ADM, Pleasantville and Carroll, and just yesterday — at Wells Fargo Arena — they beat Knoxville on a Cole Henderson buzzer-beater. Junior guard Tommy Donovan has been great during the win streak, and has played well enough to become a Player of the Week nominee.
Valley: Don’t look now, but the 4A defending champions are rolling. Oh, and they have their All-State forward and four-year starter Quinton Curry back, too. The 6-foot-5 combo-forward suffered an ACL injury at the Drake Team Camp last June, but came back last week. The Tigers’ current six game win-streak is their longest of the season, and with Curry back in the mix, they become even more of a threat to repeat as state champs.
G-H-V: The Cardinals are rolling along right now, and have to be considered one of the favorites to win a 2A title. Currently our 5th-ranked team, G-H-V has rattled off 18 straight wins, and are now 20-1 on the season — their only loss coming back in December to a very good Osage squad. Sophomore James Betz isn’t putting up gaudy numbers, but has been solid for the Cardinals, averaging 12.2 points, 1.8 blocks and 6.4 rebounds per game.
Down
Des Moines East: We expected the Scarlets to struggle a bit this season, especially when we found out they lost last year’s leading scorer, Fred Bickham, to an ACL injury during the fall. And after winning three games in the first half of their season, they’ve been winless since, losers of nine straight since. Their last W came on Jan. 12th over Ottumwa.
Sioux City North: At one point this season the North Stars were a formidable 6-7, bit then the wheels fell off, and they’ve dropped seven straight since. They now sit a 6-14 and have one tough, but possibly winnable game left against 3A LeMars.
Lenox: After a 7-6 start to the season, the Tigers started a downward trend, and now, after eight straight losses, they’ve finished the regular season 7-14. Can the senior-led squad turn the switch back on for a postseason run? We’ll find out Thursday night, they face Bedford to start district play.
