Continue ReadingWith the Sectional Draw now complete, it is time to take a step forward and dig into some of the finer details. Right now, we are looking at some of the winners and losers of the draw. Who got the shaft? Who got setup for a great run?
Hebron: Winner
Hebron got a great draw for them to make it to the final game. They didn’t get a bye game but they drew an easy Delphi team with 4-win North Judson, a team they already beat this season, waiting in the wings. Then, Marquette Catholic and Winamac will play one of the best second round matchups in 2A if things go chalk, meaning they only have to face one of them.
LaVille: Winner
LaVille got a spot to be coveted. They got the bye game with a possible rematch with Bremen, a team they have already beaten. Whitko, Westview, and Fremont all have 13+ wins but only one will get the chance to possibly take on LaVille in the final. Dream scenario for the Lancers.
Lewis Cass: Winner
Between the first two teams that Cass would play in the Sectional, their combined win total as of today would be 10 wins. Four less than what Cass already has on their own. Their path leads them pretty easily, barring a meltdown, to a Sectional Championship game as they await the mess of teams on the bottom half of the bracket as Southwood and Oak Hill will have to battle through a brutal Sectional.
Broad Ripple: Winner
Broad Ripple looks like they have a chance to make a serious run this March and after the draw, they have to feel pretty good about getting through to the next round. They got the key bye game and then could face either Shortridge or Speedway, neither of which has more than 4 wins. Scecina, the only team to beat them in the Sectional this season, has to go through Covenant Christian and then Heritage Christian first.
South Knox: Winner
South Knox has to be happy that Barr-Reeve is on the other side of the bracket. They also have to be thrilled that Linton is playing them in round one. They should also be pretty stoked that they play Eastern Greene first, a team they beat by 16 earlier this season. If you wanted Icing on the cake, 6-win North Knox is waiting in the second round. That is about as good a draw as you will see.
Whitko: Loser
Whitko hasn’t won a Sectional Championship since 2008-09 when they were in 3A and playing a much tougher level of competition. Now, they have one of their best chances since that time and get stuck playing Central Noble, a surprise team, in the first round with Fremont or Westview waiting and then LaVille likely in the Championship game. Tough, tough road ahead.
Churubusco: Loser
This is a team with a pair of really solid players and in 2A ball, that can really make a difference. The problem is that they are in a Sectional with three teams with less than 6 wins and there isn’t a likely case at all that they will get to face any of them. The one team in this Sectional that did beat them this season is South Adams, the team they face in the opening round with 12-win Woodlan waiting.
Hagerstown: Loser
Being in Northeastern’s Sectional the last few years hasn’t been fun anyway but now you are going to have to face them in the second round. That is if you get past Winchester, a team that you only beat by two earlier in the year. And likely waiting in the Sectional Championship game is Cambridge City Lincoln, a team that you split a pair of games with. A lot of things have to go right if they are going to have a chance to win.
Henryville: Loser
For an 18-win team, you should feel pretty good about your chances and I’m guessing Henryville does. However, it isn’t going to be easy. They play in the toughest 2A Sectional and they drew Providence, a team they have already lost to in round one. Then, they get 14-win Paoli. Then, they like would get 16-win Crawford County, another team they have lost to this season. Not impossible but not the easiest road.
