Final Score: FW Bishop Dwenger 57 – FW Carroll 60
Carroll came out of the gates ready to play and their offense looked to be in a good rhythm early. Carroll is one of those teams who is content winning a game even if it’s in the thirties for scoring. They slow teams down and will even hold the ball for long periods of time. Carroll was up 11-8 after the first behind 4 points from senior Anthony Martin. The tides turned in the second quarter as Campbell Donovan and Bishop Dwenger took over and won the second quarter 19-11 to take a 27-22 lead into the half.
Bishop Dwenger came out in the third quarter just like they finished the second quarter, attacking the Carroll defense. Sophomore wing Hayden Smithey went 4-4 in the quarter with 10 points to pace the Saints to a 46-39 lead headed into the fourth quarter. Dwenger seemed to be in complete control of the game and Carroll was abysmal from the free-throw line.
Behind a great effort from Arius Jones, Carroll was able to find a way to get the game back to a one possession contest down the line. Jones was energy on defense and created shots for his teammates on offense. Carroll won the game on a buzzer-beater three point shot from junior Dillon Redding off the bench as time expired. The Chargers knocked off SAC opponent Bishop Dwenger 60-57 at home.
MVP: Arius Jones (Carroll)
Arius Jones was aggressive in the first two possessions of the game getting himself to the free-throw line and turned in a solid performance the entire game. Even in situations where Dwenger looked to extend their lead, Jones made a big rebound or big play for Carroll to keep them close. Jones finished with 9 points (2-5 2FG, 1-1 3FG, and 2-6 FT), 8 rebounds (7 defensive and 1 offensive), and a game high 8 assists. Arius has the ability to get to the rim with ease and although he didn’t shoot the ball well from the line tonight, he is a good free throw shooter by percentage.
Best Offensive Performance: Hayden Smithey (Bishop Dwenger)
Smithey was fantastic from the floor tonight. His jump shot looked smooth and confident and his ability to finished over defenders with his athleticism was on full display. Hayden scored from all three levels on the floor and did it with ease and confidence. Smithey finished with 14 points (2-2 2FG, 3-4 3FG, and 1-2 FT), 7 rebounds (6 defensive and 1 offensive), 5 assists, 1 steal, and 1 blocked shot. Smithey scored 14 on 6 shots from the floor and at a high rate (83%). If Smithey can continue to be this efficient from the floor, the sophomore will start to get more attention on the offensive end from his coaching staff.
Best Defensive Performance: Conlan Martin (Bishop Dwenger)
Conlan is known for his three-point shooting ability but the senior found other ways to impact the game tonight. Martin didn’t have the best night on the offensive end but he lead the game with 3 steals and made some big plays for his team to keep the game close. Martin finished with 12 points (2-3 2FG, 2-6 3FG, and 2-2 FT), 8 rebounds (3 defensive and 5 offensive), 4 assists, and a game high 3 steals. Martin is an undersized guard but he made up for it with his quickness and basketball IQ on the defensive end tonight for the Saints.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Jacob Redding (Carroll)
Jacob Redding quietly lead the game in the scoring column. Redding has proven that he can score at all levels and has really been working on his ball handling and ability to get to the rim in the off-season. Jacob finished with a game high 15 points (2-6 2FG, 3-3 3FG, and 2-2 FT), 1 defensive rebound, 1 assist, and 1 blocked shot. Although he wasn’t great inside the arc, Redding showed off his stroke from deep. Jacob will be the leading scorer for Carroll throughout the season and gets a lot of open looks from Arius Jones and his ability to get to the rim.
Best Player Off-The-Bench: Anthony Martin (Carroll)
Anthony Martin came off-the-bench for the Chargers tonight but was instant offense. The first two possessions that he was on the floor, he had a quick 4 points. Martin has been shuffled in and out of the starting lineup this season for Carroll. Martin finished with 12 points (5-7 2FG, 0-1 3FG, and 2-5 FT), 3 offensive rebounds, and 1 assist. On an off night for the Chargers from the free-throw line, Martin’s 2-5 was about average. The senior brings experience and consistency to this team and if he continues to produce at this level off-the-bench, Carroll will see trends in their plus-minus by the quarter.
Biggest Quiet Impact: Campbell Donovan (Bishop Dwenger)
Campbell Donovan put together a quiet game but had a big impact on the status of the game at the end of the half and third quarter. Donovan was superb through the first three quarters before Carroll shut him down in the final quarter. Campbell finished with 13 points (0-2 2FG, 3-7 3FG, and 4-4 FT), 2 defensive rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. The senior guard brings energy and multiple skills to this team. He can score off-the-bounce as well as shoot it at a high rate from deep. Donovan, Martin, and Pentenburg are the unspoken leaders for this Bishop Dwenger group and make up a strong back-court.
Best Intangibles: Jack Pentenburg (Bishop Dwenger)
Jack Pentenburg brings a different element to this Bishop Dwenger back-court. Martin and Donovan are guys that can fill it up in a hurry and are serious offensive threats which opens the door for Pentenburg on certain occasions. Jack is a good scoring guard but he is by far the best defender of the three of them. Jack finished with 6 points (3-4 2FG and 0-2 3FG), 3 rebounds (1 defensive and 2 offensive), and a team high 6 assists. Pentenburg has all sorts of offensive threats around him from Martin to Donovan to Smithey and he is a superb passer when he gets into the middle of the defense. His small frame and strength allow him to get to his spots on the floor whenever he wants too.
Best Rebounder: Nick Passino (Bishop Dwenger)
Nick Passino battled foul trouble throughout the night but the 6’7” senior forward held his own down low. He has decent athleticism and a long reach that allowed him to high point the ball. He didn’t see much opposition in the size category as 6’9” Jared Hofer from Carroll didn’t see the floor much. Passino finished with 6 points (3-5 2FG and 0-3 FT) and 8 rebounds (7 defensive and 1 offensive). He battled for a few tough rebounds but the majority of them were uncontested. What was most impressive about his rebounding ability was his outlet passing that helped the Saints get out and run a few possessions.
Best Underclassmen: Hayden Smithey (Bishop Dwenger)
Hayden Smithey was one of the few underclassmen that saw some court time tonight but he was the most skilled and talented of the bunch. Smithey has shown improvement in his ball handling and athleticism over the past year but still needs a little work on his defensive footwork. He was very confident with his jump shot tonight only missing one from the top of the key. Smithey finished with 14 points (2-2 2FG, 3-4 3FG, and 1-2 FT), 7 rebounds (6 defensive and 1 offensive), 5 assists, 1 steal, and 1 blocked shot. There have been a few occasions this season where Smithey has finished above the rim and the sophomore is really looking to come into his own in the second half of the season.
Biggest Takeaway: Carroll’s Inconsistent Line-Ups
Carroll seems to throw together any and every combination of starters and bench players imaginable. Their inconsistent lineups lead to some turnovers and questionable passes due to players not knowing each other’s tendencies. When Carroll finally found one that worked in the fourth quarter, it was almost too little too late for them to come back. Bishop Dwenger put together a tough performance but this was only their sixth game of the season. When Martin gets going for them, they will be tough to handle this season.
