DeLaSalle’s intense work defensively pounded Kaukauna and Jordan McCabe into the ground, not giving up anything easy while scoring all over the floor to put up a hefty offensive number. 97-65 final and it wasn’t even close.
MVP: Goanar Mar (SF, 6-7, Sr., DeLaSalle)
As usual, Goanar was solid all around. He’s been rebounding like a fiend lately and today he had nine of them to go with 21 points. He shot well from beyond the arc and took advantage of mismatches down low. The George Mason-bound forward did not disappoint.
Best offensive performance: Gabe Kalscheur (SG, 6-4, Jr., DeLaSalle)
He’s such a dynamic scorer, you probably won’t stop him from getting 20. He finished with 25 from every spot on the floor and his ability to finish plays through contact is noteworthy. A straight scorer for DeLaSalle that is reliable for a spark every game.
Best defensive performance: Dominic Bledsoe (G, 6-1, Sr., DeLaSalle)
From the start Bledsoe had energy. He knocked down a triple to open the game and added some steals on loose balls. He grabbed a handful of rebounds as well, keeping Coach Thorson’s need for constant intensity satisfied.
Best shooter: Eric Carl (SG, 6-4, Jr., Kaukauna)
A lanky wing for the Ghosts, Carl five first half treys and finished with 23 points. They were all catch-and-shoot looks and he consistently hit them even when hotly contested. A much-needed offensive threat while McCabe struggled.
Best rebounder: Goanar Mar
He used a combo of positioning himself and his own pure athleticism to snatch his nine boards, and even pushed the pace himself for a couple fast break layups. Impressive coast-to-coast moves from Goanar.
Best underclassman: Tyrell Terry (PG, 6-0, So., DeLaSalle)
He makes up for lack of bulk with craftiness and quick first steps. Scored a quiet 11 points and hit a couple open treys. He’s a reliable shooting threat and can get to the basket in a hurry. Having starting experience will pay dividends in his already expanding game.
Best post player: Malik Lamin (C, 6-8, So., DeLaSalle)
Recently getting a little more playing time, Lamin looked pretty comfortable on a varsity floor. He works hard defensively getting deflections and blocks in the paint while his back-to-the-basket game was more advanced than I expected. A good inside presence for Coach Thorson over the next couple years.
Best storyline moving forward: DeLaSalle is back again
Were they ever not here anyway? Some thought that the door opened a little wider this season for other Class AAA teams but the way De was firing on all cylinders today, I’m not sure anyone can totally stop them. Marshall, Delano and Orono are probably the top contenders.
Other: Jordan McCabe (PG, 6-0, Jr., Kaukauna)
The West Virginia-committed lead guard didn’t have much room to breathe with Islanders all over him. Shot just 5-24 on the game for 19 points, but you can tell his handles are tight and he can create stuff for himself and teammates. Just an off night for him.
