Final Score: Cathedral 52 – Carmel 76
Cathedral came out in the first half and really struggled to get into any kind of flow on offense. They rely heavily on Jarron Coleman to pace them and he couldn’t get his shot to fall. Carmel took a 16-7 lead into the second quarter behind a strong first quarter performance from Sterling Brown. The second quarter was much of the same as Carmel stretched their lead to 17 at the half, winning the second quarter 17-9 behind sophomore big man John Michael Mulloy who had 11 at the break. Carmel was up 33-16 at the half.
Coming out in the second half, Cathedral seemed to be a new team and were much more aggressive on both ends of the court. Cathedral started to pick up the pace of play and Jarron Coleman started to get going a little bit on the offensive end. Carmel was still able to win the third quarter 23-18 but this was more of the pace of play and teams we expected to see. Cathedral trailed 56-34 heading into the final quarter.
Carmel continued their dominance to the final quarter. John Michael Mulloy put up a strong double-double performance and Sterling Brown paced the game with 22 points. Carmel got good minutes off-the-bench from Cole Jenkins. Cathedral scored 18 again in the fourth quarter but Carmel scored 20. The final score was 76-52 in favor of the Greyhounds.
MVP: John Michael Mulloy (Carmel)
The 6’10” sophomore was great tonight. Mulloy was efficient on the offensive end, deterred shots on the defensive end, rebounded the ball in big situations, and made all his free-throws. Mulloy posted a double-double with 17 points (5-6 2FG and 7-7 FT), a game high 12 rebounds (7 defensive and 5 offensive), a game high 4 blocks, 4 assists, and 1 steal. John shot 83% from the floor and 100% from the free-throw line. To score 17 points on just 6 shot attempts is great production out of the sophomore. Mulloy has started to show why is amongst the top players in the state in the Class of 2019.
Best Offensive Performance: John Michael Mulloy (Carmel)
Hard not to give the nod to John Michael Mulloy for Best Offensive Performance when he only missed one shot and scored 17 points. Shooting 5-6 on 2FG and 7-7 from the free-throw line was something that I have yet to see this season. His 15-foot jump shot looked smooth and confident and he was automatic from the free-throw line. Mulloy attacked the offensive glass as well pulling down 5 offensive rebounds that turned into 6 points for John and 2 other possessions for the Greyhounds. Carmel’s offense should try and get Mulloy more touches down-low as he drew double teams and is a great passer for his size.
Best Defensive Performance: Tra Landers (Cathedral)
In a slow offensive game for Cathedral, Landers found other ways to get involved in the game and help his team. Landers lead the game in the steal category and his energy and effort in the third quarter helped Cathedral to start playing like they should have been the entire game. Landers finished with 9 points (1-3 2FG, 1-2 3FG, and 4-6 FT), 3 rebounds (2 defensive and 1 offensive), 2 assists, and a game-tying high 4 steals. His defensive footwork and basketball IQ made him a strong on and off ball defender for the Irish tonight starting a couple of fast-break opportunities with his steals.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Jarron Coleman (Cathedral)
Jarron Coleman has put together some really tough performances this season but struggled mightily from the floor tonight against Carmel. It wasn’t until the second half that Coleman really got anything going in his favor. Coleman finished with a team high 14 points (3-10 2FG, 2-10 3FG, and 2-4 FT), a team high 10 rebounds (6 defensive and 4 offensive), a team high 5 assists, and a game-tying high 4 steals. Coleman was effective in the second half when he seemed to get more upset with his play. He was more aggressive going to the basket and attacked the glass with reckless abandonment.
Best Player Off-The-Bench: James Franklin (Cathedral)
James Franklin gave good minutes off-the-bench for the Irish and Coach Delaney tonight. He was moved into the starting group at the start of the second half because of his willingness to help create movement on offense and his effort on the defensive end. Franklin finished with 8 points (2-4 2FG and 4-5 FT), 2 defensive rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. The sophomore guard showed determination and mental toughness as he battled through the adversity and played with passion each and every possession.
Best Shooter: Sterling Brown (Carmel)
Sterling Brown showed off his 3-point prowess in this contest. Brown could have gotten the nod for the Best Offensive Performance for posting the game high in the scoring column. Brown finished with 22 points (3-9 2FG, 4-7 3FG, and 4-4 FT), 3 rebounds (2 defensive and 1 offensive), 4 assists, and 2 steals. Brown was looking for his offense with every touch. He hit a three off the bounce, one in transition, one was a catch and shoot, and the fourth was a wide-open shot from an offensive set. Sterling had a fantastic summer and hasn’t seemed to slow down sense.
Best Intangibles: Hunter Jackson (Cathedral)
Hunter Jackson may be one of the best on-ball defenders in the state. He takes pride in stopping his man and helping his team in other ways than scoring. The freshman guard showed no sign of backing down in any situation tonight against the Greyhounds. Jackson finished with 9 points (1-3 2FG, 2-4 3FG, and 1-2 FT), 2 defensive rebounds, and 2 assists. Jackson is undersized but he has the ability to win loose balls and bring down rebounds in crowded situations. Hunter has worked on his offensive game and it showed tonight as he was more confident in his jump shot than he was a year ago.
Best Rebounder: Jarron Coleman (Cathedral)
Although he didn’t lead the game in rebounds, Jarron Coleman dominated the glass in the second half of the game. Coleman used his length and athleticism to attack the boards on both ends pulling down a team high 10 rebounds. His aggressiveness really helped him in this game when it came to pulling down rebounds. Coleman created second chance opportunities with 4 offensive rebounds and put an end to 6 possessions with his defensive rebounds.
Best Underclassmen: John Michael Mulloy (Carmel)
John Michael Mulloy really showed his developing game tonight. He finished through contact and in traffic tonight. Stepped out to 15-feet and looked comfortable with his jump shot (can knock-down the deep ball as well), and was perfect from the free-throw line. Mulloy really blossomed this summer and colleges and universities have been taking notice. As John continues to work on his touch away from the rim, he will work his way into a stretch four position and will be lethal on the offensive end.
Biggest Takeaway: Catherdral’s Inability to Score
Cathedral relies heavily on their junior All-Start to pace their offense and when he had an off game, they struggled to get into any flow on the offensive end. Coleman has the ability to score at all three-levels at ease and when he’s playing well, he is one of the toughest players to guard in the state. Cathedral will need to find other ways to get things going without Coleman playing at a high level. Carmel looked great in every aspect of the game tonight and will be a tough team to knock off come post-season.
