He’s got the athleticism to play high-major D1, which is one of the most important aspects in terms of getting offers, so he’s already close. I believe a little bit of development offensively could land him that high-major offer.
Here’s my take on Davion’s game:
Strengths:
Athleticism – Easily the strongest part of his game, he has the athleticism to compete with anybody. While 6’2″ is not tiny for a guard, it isn’t huge either. His athleticism more than makes up for this. He’s capable of pressuring opponents the entire length of the court. He’s capable of dunking and finishing in traffic and over/through people. He has speed, quickness, strength, and vertical. He is the complete package athletically.
Aggression – He’s a football player too and you can tell. He plays hard the whole game and uses his athleticism to it’s fullest potential. He’s constantly jumping passing lanes and looking to run in transition.
Transition – Williams is deadly in transition. If he gets the ball with an opportunity to run, watch out. There aren’t very many people who can run with him in transition, and out of those that can run with there aren’t very many that can jump with him. He’s also capable of hitting a midrange pull-up jumper in transition.
Areas For Development:
Shooting – Williams is capable of making jumpshots, but it definitely isn’t a strong part of his game. He has an awkward shot with a hitch in it. On the positive side, a jumpshot can be improved by simply putting in the time. A jumpshot is the easiest skill to improve in basketball.
Playmaking – While he has solid handles, I would like to see him utilize them to facilitate more often. He’s capable of being a playmaking point guard; it’s simply a matter of looking to assist more. This wouldn’t even be a thought if he was even 2 inches taller, but since he is 6’2″ he will most likely be asked to play point guard, and a point guard needs to be able to create easy shots for his teammates if he wants to win consistently.
