While he is by no means a superstar, I believe he could be a solid role player in JuCo or D3. He can shoot and finish around the rim. He rebounds and plays hard defense. He moves well without the ball and cuts to get himself easy shots. He has a good overall basketball IQ.
Here’s my take on Hector’s game:
Strengths:
Shooting – Really good spot up shooter. He’s good at running his defender off a screen for an easy catch-and-shoot opportunity. He’s good at cutting and moving without the ball to set up an open look. He has a smooth, comfortable shot.
Off-ball Movement – He excels when he’s playing off ball. He has an innate ability to sneak past his defender for an easy shot or layup. This is how he gets the majority of his points. His ability to make an impact on offense without having to dominate the ball makes him a solid role player.
Rebounding – While this may not translate to the college level simply because of his height, he still rebounds at a high level in high school. He’s good at getting in position and boxing out. In the couple games I have watched him play, he has gotten several offensive rebounds that he turned into easy layups or free throws. This is another important skill for a role player to possess.
Finishing – Hector gets a solid chunk of his points via layups or close shots. He is capable of finishing on both sides of the rim and in traffic. Overall, he is very efficient close to the rim.
Areas For Development:
Athleticism – He will need to add weight and become quicker if he wants to realize his full potential. His skillset gives him potential to become a very good 3-and-D player if he can defend in college. Becoming more athletic will help Hector in the rebounding department as well.
Playmaking – If he is content with being a solid role player, then the playmaking ability may not be necessary for Hector to ever develop. However, the ability to put the ball on the floor and create for himself or his teammates is always a valuable skill.
