The 5-foot-9 junior does not play grassroots ball in the offseason, and though he knows it could help with his exposure, Hensley says playing baseball is something that’s important to him.
“No coaches have contacted me for basketball. I’ve gotten stuff for track, but nothing for basketball. I feel a little bit under the radar, and I know going to all those camps and playing AAU would help a lot, most kids are getting recognized for all that stuff,” said Hensley.
“That (playing grassroots) would help a lot, I know, with my recruiting, but I like baseball a lot too and it’s hard to do both. I know that would help a lot, but it’s just hard.”
Hensley says basketball is his favorite sport, and does want to play at the level.
“I play a lot of other sports, and I come from a smaller school than most of those kids,” he said. “But I do love basketball and it’s my favorite sport, and it’s the one thing I want to get recruited in.
So far this season Hensley has been spectacular, averaging 21.5 points, 4.3 steals and 5.6 rebounds per game for the Cougars.
“What I think of my skills is I can shoot pretty well from around the arc, and I hustle a lot, I get a lot of steals and play passing lanes pretty well. And I rebound pretty well, I think I lead the team in rebounds and we have a 6’5 guy on the team,” he said.
“I’m just making sure I’m doing whatever I can to help the team win, whether I’m scoring or not.”
What helps him most on the court is his speed and endurance, and it’s his prowess in track that helps him with that. He was a state-qualifier last season in the 800 meter.
“My freshman year I wasn’t very fast at all, and this past year I surprised myself and I made it to State with a 2:04 800 meter. I like basketball a lot more and I would rather play that after high school than run track, but whatever the best option is I’ll do,” he said.
“Track is just something I do so I’m not bored all the time. And it helps me with other sports and I just like to compete — so it’s just another sport to compete in and have fun.”
