The Jags won the Bethel tournament by beating Minnetonka in overtime topping them out at 7-1 on the year. They’ve stepped up the competition in 2017 with competitive losses to Wayzata and Eden Prairie heading into the Metro West season.
“The season is off to a pretty good start I’d say,” Hird told PHD. “We’re 7-2 right now and we have some big games coming up that will be good tests. I think we can win quite of few games coming up if we play like we know we can.”
Hird is the team’s second leading scorer behind Navy bound Tyler Riemersma. The roles that Joe has had in his life with the Jaguars the last three years, with the Jaguar football team, and on the Minnesota Warriors, he’s become a player that others can look up to within the program.
“I think being a senior has really made my leadership skills grow,” Joe said. “In practice and games I’m just trying to work as hard as I can and lead by example.
“Because it’s our last season it puts a different perspective in my mind that this is our last chance to make a playoff run. All 4 of our seniors are captains and we all have similar goals so we’re working hard to achieve them.
At some point Joe will have to decide if he wants to play football, basketball, or both. Where? He’s not sure yet but options will be there.
“Right now I’m getting interest from mainly division three and NAIA schools,” Hird said. “St. John’s, Viterbo, St. Thomas, St. Olaf, and UW-La Crosse have all been contacting me. I’m also looking to possibly play football at a higher level, so as of now I’m unsure where I’ll be next year.”
