Continue ReadingThrough the first half of the season, Hugh Brown (2018) has led Hawken High School (Gates Mill, OH) to first place in the Chagrin Valley Conference.
Brown and sharp-shooting backcourt mate Brandon Paul steer the ship for Hawken. For the 5’10” junior, he doesn’t just play point guard, he leads at all times.
“I’m really focused on being a leader this year … Taking the role of leading as an example for the younger guys on the team, and even those older, just letting my actions play out so they can follow,” Brown said.
Partially because of a high-character and 3.4 GPA, Brown has drawn interest from John Carroll, Oberlin, and Case Western.
“I’ve definitely gotten some interest. Nothing really, really serious but kind of early on stuff to go to camps over the summer and see where I am there,” Brown explained. “My time will come. Just got to continue to be patient and play the right way.”
Scouts will admire his midrange game. At 5’10”, he doesn’t force contested shots in the paint. While he certainly possesses finishing skills, his pull-up jumper and passing ability are most impressive when he gets a step on the initial defender.
“I just plan on making the right basketball play. If the basket is there to score, then I’m going to the hole. But if not, I’ve been a pass-first person for a good amount of my basketball career.”
“I’ve been complimented often times by coaches about my IQ, so I feel like that’s really important. I may not be the quickest, strongest, fastest, but I definitely feel like I know the game pretty well to where I can have an effect whenever I’m out there,” Brown said.
As mentioned, Brown can also pull-up off the dribble. “I just feel like [midrange] is a lost art. Over the summer, I’ve been working heavily on that shot,” Brown said.
He mentioned that he often watches film on Chris Paul to pick up some moves, who he admires for his IQ and versatility.
Brown is optimistic that he will grow a few more inches.
Brown has had success this season, averaging 14 points and 4 assists through 13 games. However, he would like to continue extending his shooting range. Doing so could help him draw more attention from college programs.
Another way to boost his stock will be to keep leading Hawken to victories. They have a challenge at home against Cuyahoga Heights (7-5) this Friday at 7:30.
