So I started asking around with the Maple Grove people who I knew, and they all had good things to say about Gare.
“Good kid. Improving rapidly.” “He has come a long way.” “The kids say he’s the best athlete on the team.”
With that kind of feedback, I had to catch up with the 6-foot-2 wing after the game.
“At the beginning of the season, I would always get into foul trouble. But I’ve been playing better and smarter as the year has gone on. I feel like my role is expanding; last year I didn’t get much time. I think I’ve definitely stepped up.”
Gare says his goal since he was little has been to play college basketball. Northwestern-St. Paul, Central Lakes and Northland are the main ones talking to him right now. His grades are in a good spot with a 3.23 GPA.
The biggest difference this year for Gare has been his confidence.
“I go into the game and my coaches help me succeed. I just do what they tell me to do,” he said. “Slashing, driving, I’m a good defender, too. I am still working on my shot.”
