Now, the 6-foot-2 guard is the leading scorer for the Green Devils, and the catalyst for their early season success.
With some very decent size and plenty of ability, there’s been some Division II and Division III schools starting to take notice.
“The Wartburg and Coe coaches have texted me quite a bit,” said Olson. “But I’ve been getting letters from (D2s) Winona State and University of Sioux Falls.”
Olson still has plenty of time for his recruitment to materialize, but has already considered what he might expect out of a college career.
“I guess I just want to find a school that fits me on and off the court, said Olson. “And if I go to a D2 school I probably won’t play as a freshman, but I’d like to work my way into the lineup as a sophomore maybe. And I want to find a good education because that’s why I’m doing all of this.”
A menace on defense and efficient on offense, Olson defined his playing style in his own words to PHIA.
“I’d say defensively I’m pretty good help-side, and I’m a pretty good defender. And offensively I like to make everyone around me better, said Olson.
After being the the Green Devils’ third scoring option last season as a sophomore, Olson has blossomed into a star this season. He’s averaging 19.5 points on 55 percent shooting (45 3FG%), and 5.7 rebounds per game.
“Last year we had two seniors that pretty much led us in every category except assists and steals. And this year I have to be the guy that steps up in tight games, and now it’s kind of my role to lead the team” said Olson, who’s looking to lead his team back to state for the second straight season.
“Our expectation is to get to state, and last season we got throttled down there by Cascade and that hurt. And every summer workout, that’s what I was thinking about when I was going through the drills.”
